Louis' interview at Big Top 40 - 02.11
Yeah, yeah. But from a fan's perspective, I think you've probably been waiting for me to say similar words, you know? They're always there for me and I appreciate that. But, you know, this is the first time where I really, really, really believe in myself and believe in what I'm doing. [That's mad to think, because this is your third, is it your third album?] Yeah. So it's taken three solo albums to get to that point. Yeah, I think, you know, nature of leaving a massive band like One Direction, that it comes with so much that you have to unpack and stuff. And, you know, I did a lot of that working out who I was as an artist in the public eye. Especially that first, that first record, it took me maybe three years to make that record, that Walls, my first album. you know, I still love and cherish all those songs. I just, I needed to make all those steps to get here, I think. And you know, things like some people, in terms of being an artist, click straight away. It took me a bit of time to work that out and navigate what life looked like after One Direction, definitely.
Louis about feeling more confident as an artist to Big Top 40
That's a big question. There's probably numerous songs. The first thing that comes to mind was when I was about 14. I'm sure other songs will have had an influence on me at this point. When I was about 14, I got bought for Christmas the live DVD of Green Day's tour, 'Bullet in a Bible'. And it was the American Idiot tour. And I just remember falling in love with that. I'd listened to the record a little bit, but it was mostly watching the live performance and watching how amazing a performer he is. So like that definitely made a massive impression on me as a young lad.
'As we look back, what's the song or album that made you fall in love with music?' | Big Top 40
Louis with Big Top 40's host Will Manning a few weeks ago - 22.10
I called the tour, the album's called How Did I Get Here?, and I called the tour 'How Did We Get Here'. The moment to raise a glass is... at any of the shows when me fans, we can do it together, me and them, because probably the biggest celebration I've had to date was at the O2 when I played last year. And that was the first time in my career where I've had that much pressure and I've actually felt like I delivered like it was really, really, it was a really great moment for me. And it felt like an utter celebration. So it's important for me that in those moments, the fans, it's, you know, we toast together because I wouldn't be in those rooms without them, definitely.
'Looking forward, what's something you're, like, raising a glass to now, something that's going really great?' | Big Top 40
I would say, I mean it's deep but I would say my solo career as a whole, definitely. That was such a daunting task after being in something uber successful and then being like, 'shall I try and do my own thing?' You know, I was really, really daunting and really challenging. But I feel really good about it now, you know, and I feel really thankful that I was brave enough to kind of make those choices. So, yeah. Probably my solo career as a whole.
'When life gives you lemons, what's a moment in your career that felt like making lemonade out of lemons, like turning something tough into something great?' | Big Top 40
Yeah, I'm excited. I feel really, really good about this campaign. Yeah, got off to a bit of a flyer with this single. I feel really confident about it. I wanted this record to feel like a level up, but also to feel... It's been a long time where, you know, I've needed a lot of my fans' support and help to kind of do what I do. I wanted this record to feel like a bit of a breath of fresh air to the fans. So this is my moment where I feel really good in my own skin. I feel really good in the record that I've made. And of course, their support is as vital as it's always been, but it comes from a slightly different place, this record. There's a better understanding, I think, of myself as an artist.
Louis talking about the new era on Big Top 40
I think subconsciously a lot of the influence happens naturally, I would say. But I'd say what I've been most influenced by on this record is people. Like Sam Fender's last record called People Watching, what an amazing, incredible title. I absolutely love that. And yeah, I would say mostly just influence from people and psychology and things like that.
