Though I cannot fault my old Caradice saddlebag, I decided several months ago that I needed a more compact and less dorky solution for tool carrying duties to complement it. Inspired by Strawfoot’s tool roll, but displeased by their relatively high cost, I went searching and found BIGxTOP.
BIGxTOP is a small company headed by Jordan Trent that make high quality bags, primarily from materials produced in the UK, for surprisingly low prices.
Though it lacks the ‘frequent kale-nosher’ aesthetic of the Strawfoot bag with its waxed canvas and leather construction, for about half the price you get a trendy, understated bit of kit made of equally durable PU-backed cordura.
I have been using my saddle roll daily for around 6 months now and (un)fortunately I’ve had more than my fair share of trailside mishaps to draw some real conclusions about this little brown bag.
To attach the roll, you thread either end of the reassuringly chunky webbing through your saddle rails and cinch it down with the similarly burly ladder lock buckle. Though this is a bit fiddly to begin with and never much fun to do when it’s covered with mud, I’ve never had the roll come loose and have not missed the incessant rattling of a regular saddle bag once.
There are also no chafed thighs to report here. Once tightened down, the bag sits snugly between your saddle rails and you’ll completely forget about it till you need it next.
Although the roll will easily take my usual tool-carry plus a road inner-tube, I wish I had requested a slightly larger one that would accommodate a 29er tube.
Barring this, I cannot fault the roll and for the sake of £15, I suggest that you all invest in a more rattle-free lifestyle.
