The Slap Maxwell Story 1.14
This episode has one of my all-time favourite scenes. From any show. Ever.
In the middle of the episode, Slap drives a soldier home to his parents and watches the reunion. It’s both a touching scene and an over-the-top parody of such scenes. It works on many levels. At the end of the episode, standing alone on his own doorstep Slap imagines the reunion scene with himself as the returning hero. It’s a wonderful moment that has stayed with me for thirty years.
As an episode this is one of the better ones. It removes Slap from his world and the world of the show. The situation of the situation comedy. Instead, Slap is off driving to his hometown and the supporting characters have to live on without him.
The Slap scenes are the best. Sometimes he’s hard to like, but we always care about him.
The Judy scenes are weaker. Because of the time spent on Charlie’s love for her. It seems overblown and strained. But, having the said that, it gets good when she dances with him. That’s great.
