My research assistant, Mona always dutifully makes sure that I am not going anywhere when I should be reading comics. Today I am wallowing in the Golden Age. During this period there were many trends and shifts in tastes, good and bad. The poster child for all that was wrong, EC’s Bill Gaines. His transformation of his father’s comic company that had mostly peddled Bible Stories, morality tales and light hearted crime drama, took everything to another level. His studio of artists produced what is inarguably the greatest visual works of the period and they consistently upped the drama, the horror and the violence all wrapped around the most vicious and disturbing finales. Although ultimately rooted in morality tales, some folk didn’t quite see it that way, they just saw vile child ruining grotesqueries, so with the introduction of the Comics Code and the soon to come end of EC the Golden Age of comics shuddered to a close. We have many fabulous volumes of this stuff on hand at all times: WEIRD SCIENCE and WEIRD FANTASY, SHOCK SUSPENSTORIES, VAULT OF HORROR, TWO FISTED TALES and of course TALES FROM THE CRYPT. Try some, it may lead you to juvenile delinquency, but it’s worth it! #ec #talesfromthecrypt #billgaineswasright #comicscodeauthority #cbldf #weirdscience #wallywood #harveykurtzman #jackdavis #grahamingles #thecryptkeeper https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzyg_EvJ_rY/?igshid=dkvupghtml2e
