Frank Lloyd Wright and Alfonso Ianelli
Sprites for Midway Gardens, 1914
When Frank Lloyd Wright’s Midway Gardens was demolished, it was believed that all of the custom sculpture was gone, too. But apparently somebody on the wrecking crew saved these sculptures and stashed them in a farmfield. They have since been restored and donated to the Arizona Biltmore Hotel.
Although Alfonso Ianelli sculpted these graceful “herms,” Frank Lloyd Wright called them his creations. Ianelli was offended and never worked with Wright again.
