So because I am a fucking nerd and watched a period-drama Bollywood movie now I’m writing fanfic and like any good fanfic writer I find myself in need of knowing how surgery/pain killers were understood and administered in 16th century India and while the past two weeks have wildly opened my eyes to the fact that there were NO COURSES WHATSOEVER about Indian & southeast Asian history in my college career and there were also NO COURSES WHATSOEVER about the Middle East/Arabic world other than“the Romans went bye-bye and then there were some crusades or whatever, here are all the white dudes that invaded Syria Lebanon Jordan Israel”
Because I was today years old when I learned that many Islamic kingdoms had working essentially modern hospitals, which included residencies, research, education, and theories of equity of care and ethics and LICENSED DOCTORS, and PEOPLE TO TRACK DOWN DUDES WHO WERE PRACTICING MEDICINE WITHOUT A LICENSE. IN THE 900S. Like, the year 931. NINE HUNDRED THIRTY ONE.
You realize at some point that your education was super biased and racist--you overcome some parts of it, you winnow them out as best you can, you research more and learn more and try to be better
Your stupid fucking ‘White People Totes Aweshumsauce’-educated brain just dribbles over MASSIVE bits of human history that take place over MASSIVE parts of the planet.
Before two weeks ago I didn’t know any Indian history beyond...”hey, I think there were Vedic texts? Maybe? Also that Buddha guy happened but his religion didn’t really take off there, it took off in Other Places” and “hey, what a correlation between the American civil war & Britain putting the screws to India, huh, never really saw that parallel before,” and “Ghandi was a dude, he did a good thing but he was at minimum a complicated guy.”
An imperial rule that lasted from the early 1500s until literally the British showed up saying Open the Country? Nope.
The empire being run by people descended from Mongolian steppe invaders from Iran/Afghanistan who were cousins of Ghengis & his buds? Nope.
The Arab world living in 1850 in terms of medical advancements and theory--in the freaking 800 and 900s......INCLUDING WOMEN SURGEONS BY THE 1300s????? NOPE. NOPE. NOPE. NOPE.
I should have known better but I was today years old when I had a huge realization of just HOW racist my education--MY FORTY THOUSAND DOLLAR EDUCATION--actually was.
