S Stars Don't Pair

At the centre of our galaxy lies Sag A*, our galaxies supermassive black hole, over 4.5 million times the mass of our star, a true monster, although by galactic standards, fairly normal. Around Sag A* orbits a number of very large young blue giant stars, known as S stars, in fact, it's these stars which reveal Sag A* as they orbit so close, we can track them as they spin around at various orbits, like comets around our own star.

Almost all of these stars are within 5-6 million years old, giving them almost no time at all to have migrated so close to the black hole, and suggesting they were born in this area, and that supermassive black holes not only consume, but cause star formation.

Recent research into these S type stars has found something unique. Almost all blue giant stars near to Earth have companions, binary systems. This is because they are born in nebula where multiple stars are forming, and the huge gravity of the large mass stars ties them to those stars born in close proximity or even from the same accretion disk.

However, these S type stars are mostly singleton's, like our own Sun, they don't appear to have any companions.

Astronomers believe being born in near proximity to the supermassive black hole has either disrupted the companionship, sending the others spinning out on their own, or forced merger on them while they were proto stars.

A black hole in our neighbourhood 

Not that very long ago, I wrote a blog about our nearest black hole, over 3000 light years away, but that has just changed. HR 6819 (otherwise known as QV Telescopii) is a B type star in the constellation of Telescopium, a constellation of the southern hemisphere. It’s just over 1100 light years from Earth, and just within the range of visibility for naked eye observation. The star is actually a binary system, with another smaller star close by.

Back in the mid 2000′s, it was investigated by a team looking at binary pairs with B type stars, and they noticed the smaller star appeared to be orbiting something other than the larger star. Further observation also detected that the larger star was too orbiting the same invisible object. 

Sadly the lead scientist who later picked up the trail in 2014 died in a car accident, and the investigation ended, until last year. 

New calculations show the unknown object to be around 6 times the mass of the Sun, making it too dense to be a neutron star, and therefore, most likely a stellar black hole in the same star system. 

We have long suspected that our galaxy should have many many more black holes, as they are created when a super massive star collapses and forms a singularity, but the fact even light cannot escape them has made them incredibly difficult to see unless they act upon another object or regularly ingest material from the stars around it. 

It’s quite possible this will not be the last black hole detection close in to our Sun, but one benefit of this detection is, it may be possible to use HR 6819 to attempt to image the black hole itself, similar to the image obtained from the massive black hole at the centre of M87 galaxy 53.5 million light years away, compared to 1,100 !
