it recorded this set, at my feet. i've also used it in theatre documentation and a couple narrative films i've run sound on. they turn up cheap pretty often and sound pretty much like the space they're in, for better of for worse.

i have nine or ten of them now. i've given some away to friends and my nephew.

some shots of "dial 9/i need to hear you," my first ever installation, for the invisible networks exhibition, which closed yesterday. proud of the work that went into this one, even with the time taken from me by falling health from cancer and subsequent surgery and recovery. i'd like to build on it more. the central idea was changing our relationship to recording from one of surveillance (eg through phone wiretaps) to an informed, voluntary practice of story sharing in a space designed to feel cozy.

i'll be building on it more in the future, cleaning out the guts of it to simplify and draw less power.

i had to learn a lot more about old landline telephones, found myself down some fun rabbit holes. also i'd had so many good conversations with the other artists involved in the show over the last few months.

after trying and failing to get a later gen CF card running in my fostex, i put it into this old korg MR-1, my backup/crash rig recorder, and it worked! that card is an ATA-5 card. i suspect at a certain point UDMA cards stop working in this thing, because many people have tried and failed with UDMA 6 and 7 cards. i'm going to try again with something bigger (this is a 2GB card, which would be fine if i were recording in wav but you don't get thee 1-bit recorder to record in wav) and my guess is anything than 400x or slower/60MB/s or slower will work.

today i gushed to someone about wideband binary recording and remembered a little bit of who the fuck i am. and then i picked up some film. the OG wideband binary recording medium.

light either hits a grain of silver halide or it does not. the more light is gathered in an area of film, the more silver halide particles are charged. the less light, the fewer. the developing process sheds the inactive grains as metallic silver and leaves the rest on the substrate. just like that, a photonegative is born. color works pretty much the same way, with the silver halide grains coupled to dye either red, green or blue – three lower resolution binary images, each another color, just kinda mingling with each other, all up in each other's spaces.

because there are so many grains it's just detailed as all hell. some filmstocks are so finely grained no scanner can break them. that's beautiful.
