While I like the design of the clothing, the colors just... They really do clash. A lot. The main problem I have with her Casual outfit is just the colors. The Design is actually neat, but the colors are really bad clashing. I suggest just wiping every ounce of color from her and trying different ones that don't clash c:

Her Fancy outfit I can't really critique cuz there isn't a picture for it. But I can say that because it's blue, and her hair is bright red, that it /will clash/, and /badly/. D: The colors need to be changed on that too, though I can't say for the design because, well, I can't see it. Though I do like the idea of her hair being curly c:

Weapons and Powers n'stuff. Mkay. Fire is extremely overused. Not that it's a bad thing to have it, i'm just saying, well, she's a cat, and a Pyro? Sound kinda familiar? *points at Blaze* And Light Wings are kinda toughing on the Mary-Sue thing too. :c And the Guns, while guns are not a bad choice of weapon, is there actually a reason that it shoots light and fire? That doesn't make much sense. 

Example: I have a character (that isn't in the Sonic fandom, mind you, but still a good example), that is a Demon under the rule of Astaroth. Because of this, he can summon lesser Astaroth category familiars for aid, and has the abilities of Rot (considering Astaroth is the Rot demon king etc.) 

So make sure that your powers have a reason that they are there :o Or else, it's just like anything else. I mean, even Superman has reasoning behind his powers.

AP BIO Review: Cell Communication!

In Bacteria: 

Primitive bacteria secrete molecules that enable them to respond to changes in population density. This is called quorum sensing and an example can be found in bioluminescent bacteria that only produce luciferin when populations of bacteria are big enough, not when they're small/alone.

In Plants and Animals: 

Tight Junctions: These snazzy belts are found around epithelial (skin) cells that line organs and prevent leakage into or out of these organs. For example, you wouldn't want urine leaking out of your bladder; thankfully, tight junctions prevent the urine (which contains urea) from leaking into the surrounding body cavity.

Desmosomes: These often occur in tissues that are often subjected to severe stress (no, not your brain, although school does that to all of us). To counteract the severe mechanical stress, desmosomes act as spot welds that rivet the cells of, say, the uterus together so that during childbirth, the uterus does not tear or anything terrible like that.

Gap Junctions and Plasmodesmata: The same thing, but gap junctions occur in animals and plasmodesmata occur in plants (think plasmodesmata, plants!) These simply permit materials to pass directly from the cytoplasm of one cell to its adjacent cell. For example, in the cardiac tissue of the heart, the flow of ions through gap junctions helps coordinate cardiac contractions.  Types of Signaling: Depends on Distance

Autocrine (self) signals diffuse from one part of a cell to another part within the same cell.

Synaptic signaling involves neurotransmitters that bridge the gaps between a neuron's axon and its neighboring neuron's dendrites.

Paracrine signals send messages to nearby cells with diffusion.

Exocrine signals involve secretion of materials through ducts (like tears, saliva, bile from the liver)

Endocrine signals send messages through the blood stream and are long distance.

So what exactly is a signal transduction pathway?

Signal transduction pathways are how cells interpret the signals they receive from other cells. This all begins when...

Specific signaling chemicals called ligands bind to receptors on the target cell. 

If the ligand is hydrophilic, it will bind to a membrane receptor.

If the ligand is hydrophobic (like steroids aka testosterone), it will pass through the phospholipid membrane and enter the cell where it directly controls the expression of genes. This is how testosterone brings out those manly traits in guys.

      2. The receptor is activated and "transduces" the signal into something the cell can recognize, with the  use of messenger molecules. 

      3. In turn, the messenger molecules create a cascade effect that amplifies the signal and creates a huge cascade of reactions, resulting in an enormous release of certain molecules.

The signal transduction pathway is extremely similar in many diverse organisms, which suggests that it evolved from a common ancestor. That's it for now! If you have more questions, be sure to let me know.

Sorry, this is a stupidly long post!

Setting: A fantasy setting where a team in their teens to early twenties fight using elemental powers.

     Shasta Schuyler was an intelligent, ladylike girl from a well-off family.When Shasta was 14, she was kidnapped by a group of archers on the way home under the guise of aspiring physicists. They recognized Shasta’s intelligence and focus in what she does.They’d bound and gagged her, and drove her into the wilderness. They’d trained her to shoot arrows. Back home, her family was informed that Shasta was burned alive in a road fire.The group abused Shasta. Also, the gang’s leader had a sunny disposition that the prim and proper Shasta found entirely unnerving. Shasta was forced to use her skills to kill she didn’t even know, much less hate with a deadly passion.

     While in captivity, Shasta befriended another captive young lady. Together, they’d devised a plan to escape. This captive had a different plan; she’d ratted Shasta out to the gang leader as a diversion, while she made her escape. Consequently, Shasta was starved as a punishment. When she was too frail to function, the group left her emaciated little body on a remote island. Shasta guessed that they’d come back for her, to torture her some more.

     Shasta was almost dead when a crew of adolescents had found her. A tall, muscular, dark young man, and a tall girl worked to revive Shasta. The boy placed a needle in her arm. After a few days, Shasta remembered all that had happened to her. Shasta had come to the conclusion that these kids were more members of the archery crew that had held her captive for four years. However, she realized that she was too weak to take care of herself, so she allowed the crew to nurse her back to health. She’d tried desperately to keep watch over them, but she hadn’t the energy to even stay conscious. 

     All she wanted to do was go home, tell her mother that she’s still alive, hug her father, and have a long talk with her brothers. When Shasta had pretty well recovered, Shasta counted four other teens that were flanking the house she wanted to leave. She’d overheard a bespectacled, slender yet imposing brunette boy order the others to “not allow the girl out of sight”. Shasta learned that the decision to keep her in the house was made by the statuesque girl, who Shasta noticed had an attractive baby face and long, brown hair. She decided to emulate the leader of the gang who’d held her captive.  They’d struck her as high-strung, no-nonsense people. Therefore, Shasta would become nonsense personified! She’d smile incessantly, prank, and generally annoy the crew members in the same way that she was harassed. Surely, they wouldn’t put up with her for long, and before she knew it, she’d be free!  

     Surprisingly, they found this cute and endearing. Shasta couldn’t understand why they enjoyed her being ridiculous jubilance. At this point, she didn’t care; she’d utterly given up on her life. Shasta had learned that these kids were “defenders of the sea”, and had elemental superpowers. She saw that a redheaded, baby faced boy could probably kill her the fastest, given his whip-fast combat style, and his chaotic, impulsiveness. She’d begged the brown haired boy (whom she’d discovered to be a fire warrior) to let her take part in combat. Shed didn’t tell the boy she’d planned on intercepting the redhead’s lightning bolt attacks. It didn’t make much of a difference, they boy indignantly criticized her and yelled at her. He’d locked her into a small room with nothing inside. Once again, Shasta was in captivity, but at least she was alone. Exhausted, and hopeless, Shasta wore herself out, crying herself to sleep.

  The next morning, the girl unlocked the room, and tried to engage Shasta. Shasta sensed that this girl has noble intentions, and felt like trusting her. But Shasta had been fooled into trusting others once, and look where it had led her! The tall brunette introduced herself as Amy Kinsella. She’d described her righteous fury over the boy’s actions the previous night. This guy, named James, was the crew’s leader. Amy explained that they would get Shasta back on her feet, and whether they let her go was up to Shasta. Shasta felt that Amy’s concern and eagerness to care for her was genuine, but Shasta quietly kept her guard up. 

     She’d decided to meet the males of the crew. The redheaded boy with lightning powers introduced himself as Ethan Tate Murray. He served as the team mechanic and a spy. He spoke brusquely, and had something of an arrogant disposition. The tall, dark and muscular boy followed suit. His name was Chase Parker Allen. Shasta recognized him as the guy who’d administered her makeshift IV when she was carried away. He served as a father figure to the team, and was a self-taught nurse. He’d struck Shasta as wise, compassionate and comforting. James explained their reasons for saving Shasta. James recognized her badge as the one that this archer gang had, and he knew that having someone who is already skilled with weapons would be a great asset.  Amy also recognized the archery bandits, and wanted to pry Shasta for information. She wanted to kill every single member of that gang, for a reason. Chase just wouldn’t have been able to live with himself, if he’d left a stranger to die, without attempting to help her out. Ethan actually didn’t give a damn, and why would he, Shasta was just a random, half-dead stranger to him! So, what it came down to was: Amy and James wanted to exploit her status as an ex-bandit! But like Shasta, Amy bore a deep-seated hatred for them.

     Besides, magical powers could come in handy! The idea of sweet, long overdue revenge invigorated her. Shasta decided to accept their offer, against her better judgment.      Over time, they recruited new young members, some who’d also had troubled, nightmarish pasts. As Shasta battled alongside them, shared strategies and life stories, and helped contribute to the crew’s name and morale, her bond with the crew strengthened greatly.  By then, out of contentedness and a feeling of being “at home”, Shasta personality had developed and become one and the same with the goofy, hyperactive persona she’d once affected.It turned out that they found her annoying initially, but they kept her with them because they pitied her. Now, they weren’t shy about expressing exasperation with her constant on-the-go silliness. She knew they loved her as much as she did them. She took on the role of the team physicist, something that seemed to go against her truly carefree demeanor.  Of course, given what she’d gone through in her past, Shasta didn’t quite enjoy archery, but she’d honed her skills, because she owed it to the team that saved her life, and shaped her into the young woman she is now.

    Shasta discovered that James’s forceful personality stemmed from his innate protectiveness over others. Shasta had an epiphany that one day; she’d hope to become a famous physicist, just to break the stereotype of the stuffy old male who holes up in a room all day. Shasta decided that if anyone were to help her pursue her dream, it would be them, since they depended considerably on her know-how and logical mind. For now, Shasta is content with who she is: a plucky teenage air warrior who fights with her head, then her arrow.

    Over time, Shasta found herself increasingly intrigued by Ethan’s energetic and youthful, yet roguish charm. His audacity and forthrightness complemented and contrasted beautifully with her exuberance and gratitude to the other members of the crew. After the time skip, four years later, she and Ethan were both 22 years old. Neither of them seemed to have aged a day. Shasta was beginning to appreciate Ethan’s unique appearance, from the short height, to the pale, freckled skin, to the fiery hair, to the mischievous smirk, to his loveable baby face. But she appreciated more than his looks, he was disarmingly clever as a spy and had a whole bunch of soft spots she’d found ridiculously endearing. Contrary to Ethan’s Tsundere tendencies, which Shasta couldn’t help but find adorable, she knew he was falling for her as she was falling for him. He also found Shasta insanely cute, smart, and sweet. He’d compliment her edgy short haircut, her big blue eyes, her tiny mouth, and overall innocent look. Strangely, he didn’t seem to pay her large breasts any attention, which relieved Shasta. He was still in awe with her intelligence and found her silly, exaggerated antics to be an endless source of amusement. Yet he appreciated her seriousness, stoicism, and ingeniousness while fighting even more. She also showed her affection towards Ethan by engaging in prank wars and trading barbs with him. She’d once tried to make chilli for him, and he’d responded by jumping up and hugging her. 

Mmhmm.....

Well, I'm going to go ahead and say this honestly: she needs some work.

I wasn't able to get too much out of this for the character herself to pick out what exactly needs work. The way this is written gives me more of a story than a single character. In fact, this gives information about a whole bunch of different characters, and it makes it difficult for me to understand. I can't exactly see where the parts about her as a character are supposed to be, as this is more like reading a summary for a romance/fantasy novel.

Thank you for the submission, though! Hopefully we'll be able to see something more out of this.

Alrighty. Hopefully this won't end up being too long. As S previously said, Shasta needs work. A lot of work.

The fact that you submitted this character to be reviewed shows me that you're looking for help on improving her. In order to do that, you're going to need someone that will tell you the truth. So I'm going to have to be straight up honest with you about this. Shasta is a sue.

But after some fixes with her personality, story, some research and a lot of dedication, I believe that should could be a great character.

This character is difficult to critque as it focuses on more of what her story is, rather than who she is and how her story has molded her. So, I'm not entirely sure where to get started on this, so I will just have to start off right from the start.

In the very beginning you say that she came from a refined household, and was an intelligent girl. I think I'd like to see more of that come into her capture. Was there only one time that she tried to escape? What was her method for survival? There's really not much in any of this story that suggests her to be intelligent.

The fact that she's still cheerful and kept her well mannered ways is a little unrealistic/unbelievable. You see stuff like this all the time in characters. For me, abuse is always a risky area for a character. People love to hurt their oc's <strike> because there's just something so fun about it</strike> but it's <i><b>so</b></i> easy to go wrong here. A lot of the times people will focus on the angst factor of abuse, and turn it into a way of making others feel sorry for their oc. Which, honestly, sorta just creates an annoying character that seems kind of attention starved.

People will put their oc's through terrible, and tragic events--but there are no consequences in their psyche that have stemmed from there. Please, please, please do your best to avoid this. It is highly unrealistic for a person to go through something so difficult, and come out without any serious issues that have stemmed from it.

The thing with putting your character through abuse--or anything, really, that you put your character through--is that you have to use it to mold them. Not just to make them pitiable. What effects has the way she's been treated in the past had on her? Did it make her bitter? Timid? Untrusting? Cold? You mention that she is still prim, and proper, with a "sunny disposition." Those... those are very unlikely traits for her to have.

My suggestion to fix this would be to put some time into research. Learn about the effects abuse has on a person. Maybe even look into Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). People don't go through stuff that intense without coming out damaged. Just be careful about how much angst you put into a character. Angst is a beautiful, beautiful thing. But it's also a dangerous, difficult thing to do right. Too much angsting can make a character annoying, and unrelatable. You don't want to alienate a character from your readers by making her a giant angst fest. Avoid putting your character into difficult situations that are meant solely to show the readers how difficult their life is.

Also, I have some questions about why the group of archers that kidnapped her did so in the first place? Was it only because she had good focus? Did they have other motivations aside from she as able to focus well on things? (If so, you might want to add more in there about that. A random kidnapping just because a person can focus well is a little... far fetched. ) When they weren't torturing people, what were they doing? Right now it just kind of seems they exist solely for the purpose of Shasta being kidnapped. There's a lot here that can be added to make her a dynamic character, just try to focus less on the "BAD THINGS HAPPEN" and a little more on the "SHASTA HANDLED THIS BAD THINGS BY DOING THIS."

Don't be afraid to branch her out. Explore what's she made of more. Don't make a main character just a victim, no one likes a character that's just meant to be pitied. Make Shasta someone that people would want to root for. You're not shy about showing us the adversity she's had to face, please don't be afraid to show us how she's had to struggle to overcome the trouble she's been through, or how it's made her a better (or maybe even a worse) person.

Okay. The rest of this is kind of difficult to follow, as it tells less and less about who she is and seems to give more of a brief synposis of the story she is a part of.

From the little I can gather from it about her, it seems that once again she is just a victim. She asks to join them, and the result is that she is yelled at, then locked up. It seems to be very inconsistent to me that these good hearted people, who took the time, energy, and resources to save a stranger... would only lock her up. Was there a reason that she was treated like this? In all honesty, it just seems like another way to try and force your readers into pitying this character.

Just... really the reaction of this group towards her in general seems pretty inconsistent. First she acts purposely overly cheerful, but they find it cute. Then later they say they only kept her because of her skill. Then later... because they want her to join them? I'm just kind of confused about her relationship with this group in general. Their actions toward her seem rather contradictory.

There are a few other things I have to say about her, but don't worry, I'm almost done. (bear with me!)

The fact that she dedicates her life to becoming a phycists only because she wanted to change a stereotype....? Yeah, again this is unrealistic. It would make sense of that was one of many reasons for her to want to pursue this course of action, but not just because she wants to prove girls are just as good as boys. It's cool to have a female character being just as smart/tough as the boys, but that's.. just a little extreme.

There's not really much I have to say about the ending, as once again it's more about the story, rather than her. But I really feel the need to point out that pointing out how Ethan didn't care for her large breast size was a very unneeded. The impression I get from this tid-bit of information is that Shasta has big boobs that EVERY PERSON EVAR WANTS A PIECE OF... and that's a no, no for any character.

Alright, I think I've said all I can about this particular piece. I think the biggest thing you need to work on is realistic emotions/mentality. Try to think of your character from another character's perspective. I see a lot of other people either having a special hate for her (and treating her unfairly) or giving her too much leniency without a real reason to.

Like every good story, there's going to have to be a lot of work put into it before it's perfect. There is definitely potential here for a good story. So keep on trying and I'm sure you'll get to that point!
