Home Improvement #05: Bio Balls for the win!

The new hose and fittings were a step toward improving the pond. For a decade-and-a-half now we have had a turtle pond. Pond might not be the right word for something that holds little more water than a horse trough. But let’s go with it.

When I rebuilt the roof overhang for our front door, I rebuilt the pond in a different location. Somehow, then, the bio filter stopped working. Bio filters are simple things. They simply create enough surface area to grow the microbes that ‘eat’ ammonia and turn it into harmless nitrates. My old filter was the ideal diameter for using commercial floor scrubber pads. That’s what I did and the water, except in the sunniest weather, was always clear.

In the new pond not so much. I puzzled this but never was sure what changed. Was that old Costco hose contaminating the water? Was the copper feeder connection doing it. Frustrated, I switched to the stuff that has worked in thousands of pond: lava rock. No deal. It seemed more like the porous stones were growing algae.

My spiffy new Flexzilla hose and Dramm fittings got me to a place to thoroughly clean the pond and replace the lava rock with Bio Balls. Bio Balls? Bio Balls claim to do exactly what lava rock should have done: provide surface area for microbe growth. This seemed dubious. The porosity of lava rock should put little plastic balls in the shade. But I was desperate. So I had the friendly neighborhood Amazon driver drop off a couple of mesh bags worth. (If you are keeping score, so far it’s Amazon:6, Home Depot:0, Harbor Freight:0)

After emptying the pond, and scrubbing everything, I topped the filter off with Bio Balls—carefully arranged to be in the outflow—and held my breath. The water, of course started turning green. To be expected. Then, it reversed itself. I came home from work one day to a pond with clean, clear water. Bio Balls for the win!
