Biometrics solutions from Germany are leading the world
Almost three-quarters of German workers want to work more from their home after a BITKOM survey. In some cases high demands are placed on home workplaces in order to achieve a similar level of security as in the protected areas of a company. With biometric security solutions, companies can also secure kit working areas. German technologies are leading the world, as BITKOM now shows.
Biometrics is an automated method for recognizing people. Personal or behavioral characteristics of persons are compared with electronically stored data sets. For example, an access control can automatically check whether a person belongs to the authorized person group. The advantage of biometric procedures against conventional technologies: While ID cards or passwords can be forgotten, stolen, falsified or deliberately passed on, fingerprint, iris, face or voice are inextricably linked with the person.
Thanks to biometrics, Citi Bank employees can also process sensitive work from the desk at home. The homeworkers log on to their computer with their voice. In addition, a commercially available webcam recognizes the face of the employee and compares it with the stored image in a database. Only then can the home worker use the system of the bank. If the employee leaves his desk or looks at him an unauthorized person at work over the shoulder, the PC and monitor are immediately blocked.
German companies are at the forefront of international biometric time clocks technologies. A total of 35 such projects are presented by BITKOM in its free brochure “Biometrics Reference Projects”. They were implemented in Germany, other European countries, Asia and America. The brochure describes the project runtime, the number of users, transactions and sensors as well as the biometric characteristic used.
The readers get an impression of the different applications of biometry. “Today, a large proportion of demand is still being created by sovereign applications, such as biometric passports. However, biometric systems continue to be used in private and business life: they combine simple handling and cost-effectiveness with the highest degree of security, "says Prof. Dieter Kempf, member of the BITKOM presidency.
At present, some hundred companies with several thousand employees produce biometric products in Germany or are concerned with system integration. "The German biometry industry enjoys an international reputation and is at the forefront of face recognition worldwide,” says Kempf.
The biometrics market in Germany is growing from around EUR 120 million in 2006 to around EUR 300 million in 2010. This is clear from a study conducted by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants for BITKOM. A study by the International Biometric Group estimates that global growth will average 20 percent for the years 2009 to 2014. In 2014, this means that nearly 9.4 billion US dollars will be spent on biometric systems worldwide.
