Bio:
Shawnee comes from a family of athletes. Her parents met at the 1980 Olypics in Moscow. Her father was a water polo player, her mother a swimmer. They dated on and off for a year, their training schedules getting the best of them. However, her father soon suffered an injury and turned to coaching allowing him to settle down a bit and fully commit to Shawnee’s mother. Soon Shawnee’s brothers were born and then Shawnee herself came about. Their mom competed in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles while her father coached. All three of the Wright children were homeschooled and put into a variety of sports but soon their talents began to show. Josh was a diver and spent a lot of time in the pool. Devon was a rower. But Shawnee was a volleyball player.
She played on competitive travel teams since she was just six years old, often times playing with girls a few years older than her. Her athletics got her a full athletic scholarship to the University of San Diego. The transition from homeschooling to a large academic institution was daunting, but Shanwee through herself into it. She studied business, a major she cared little about but could get good grades in. Instead, she focused on volleyball, it became her life. On the offseason and the summer, Shawnee began training with the Olympic beach volleyball team, her skills transitioning from the gym to the sand.
Her first games were in 2004 in Athens. She didn’t compete but was an alternate for the U.S. team. Her first chance to get on the court was in 2008 in Beijing, where she and her partner won the bronze. They’ve never won gold but have been extremely close every year. Training is a year-round job and Shawnee competes on the AVP tour, charity tournaments, leagues and the FIVB world championship, more often than not dominating her competition. Her most steady partner is Audrey ( @dualityoflight) but she occasionally plays solo or with other partners in less important leagues or tournaments. Her home base is in Southern California, but training has taken her all over the world. Shawnee enjoys the travel, but at times wishes she could settle down and find someone. She was a late bloomer, not realizing she was gay until college and didn’t begin dating until her junior year. Even then dating was something that came few and far between.
