Gród na górze Birów koło Ogrodzieńca / Podzamcza
Arkadiusz Michalak "A 14th century Hungarian knobbed mace head from "Góra Birów" in Podzamcze on the Polish Jura Chain"
Birów, Poland - early medieval Slavic settlement (gord), fragmental reconstruction.
Mount Birów rises 461 meters above the sea level. It is one of the most characteristic hills in the area of Podzamcze and Ogrodzieniec. The picturesque rocky hill with a good view on the surrounding area was already a site the Neolithic settlement. The top parts of the hill, which form a depression surrounded by limestone outcrops, have important defensive qualities. Today, we can see a reconstruction of the Slavic settlement here, which was erected around the 8th century CE. The Slavs decided to build a fortification, protecting the hill with wood and stone walls on the north-eastern shaft and lime mortar stone walling from the western side. The gord was eventually destroyed by fire around the 14th century.
