Archaeologists Exploring A German Cave Just Found 40,000-Year-Old Bird Figurines That Were Carved From Mammoth Tusks

Archaeologists excavating Hohle Fels Cave in southern Germany found two prehistoric bird figurines that were carved from mammoth ivory.

These are the size of a thumbnail. Incredible.

Today we celebrate the Sunday of the Dead (Totensonntag) and remember our deceased. Like last year, I'm posting a series of bird figurines that I photographed at Ohlsdorf Cemetery in Hamburg.

Yes, 'tis the time of year when the craft store put out their resin figurines for the garden. None of these are going in the garden, of course, unless you think my living room is a garden.

Gonna repaint them eventually. Cardinals will be a male & female, not sure what the "bluebirds" are gonna be, on account of the fact that I already have 4 eastern bluebird figurines. The perched birds are gonna be barn swallows.

Got some new bird figurines — Richard Lamson baby bluebirds, and those 3 glitter snow birds I will eventually repaint.

The great hummingbird repaint 2024.

I buy bird figurines (aka garden statuary), and then repaint them to look like real birds. This year's purchase was a lot of hummingbird figurines. I made a Costa's, Anna's, rufous, ruby throated (2), bee hummingbird, and calliope (2).
