Harry Winston’s Ocean timepiece collection welcomes two Biretrograde models into the sporty yet elegant series. Mother-of-pearl dials mingle with round brilliant diamonds in an 18-karat white or rose gold case. Harry Winston Ocean Biretrograde Automatic 36mm – a winning combination of resilience, sophistication and impressive retrograde complications, these newest iterations are the essence of versatility.
Harry Winston’s Ocean collection celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018 with timepieces bedecked in vivid colors. This year, the Ocean dons a more discreet color palette with shimmering white mother-of-pearl dials and a splash of brilliant white diamonds. Designed for everyday wear, yet glamorous enough for formal engagements, the Ocean Biretrograde is the ultimate show in versatility. It is water-resistant up to 100 meters, while equipped with fascinating complications iconic to the Ocean family.
Fascinating retrograde motion
True to their heritage, the timepieces bear two hallmark Ocean complications: excentered hours and a double retrograde display. The hours and minutes counter dominates the top half of the dial, while the retrograde days of the week are at 4 o’clock and the retrograde seconds counter is at 8 o’clock. The beauty of biretrograde displays lies in the opposing choreography of the hands; the day-of-the-week hand and the seconds hand advance in opposite directions. The retrograde seconds hand is in constant motion, tracing the 30-second track before jumping back, counter-clockwise, to zero. The hand indicating the day of the week advances every 24 hours and performs its sweeping jump on Sunday at midnight. For increased functionality, a date window sits at 6 o’clock under a magnifying lens.
Like so many timepieces at Harry Winston, the background of the dial features natural mother-of-pearl. Glowing with its signature iridescence, the nacre shines in all four counters. A total of 99 brilliant-cut diamonds highlight the counters, while an emerald-cut diamond, Mr. Winston’s favorite shape, crowns the hours. The luxurious 36mm gold cases with their distinctive arches at the crown – a tribute to the doorway of Harry Winston’s Fifth Avenue Flagship Salon – are set with the sparkle of 57 brilliant-cut diamonds.
To ensure the precision of the hours, minutes, retrograde seconds, retrograde days of the week, and the date, the Ocean Biretrograde timepieces are equipped with a first-class Swiss automatic movement. The balance spring is made from silicon, a cutting-edge material that will ensure years of impeccable service and optimize the overall performance of the movement. The automatic movement with its skeletonized rose gold rotor and circular Côtes de Genève decoration on the bridges can be admired through the sapphire crystal case back.
For an elegant finish, the Ocean Biretrograde models come with pearly alligator straps. The rose gold model is fitted with a pearly beige alligator strap, while the white gold model features a pearly white strap. Both timepieces are secured to the wrist with a gold ardillon buckle set with 42 brilliant-cut diamonds.
