Are some birthstones associated with bad luck?
Gemstones are a popular choice among couples for custom engagement rings. But not gemstones are suitable for such auspicious moments and rings as there is a belief that some birthstones are associated with bad luck.
Gemstones are most appreciated and used because of their positive mystical properties and their ability to influence an optimal outcome. But, along with that, some gems have acquired a negative reputation for being unlucky such as opal, black diamond, and pearl.
However, some gemologists do not believe in superstitious beliefs associated with gemstones, but certain stories cannot be denied.
Earlier, opals were associated with good luck. The Romans considered opal as the luckiest gemstone and a symbol of hope. In the Medival Period, opals were believed to have positive powers due to their rainbow-like color.
Despite such a long association with good fortune, this colorful stone is linked with several bad luck stories, the ‘evil eye,’ and even death.
One of the most prominent sources that sites opal’s bad reputation is Sir Walter Scott’s novel, Anne of Geierstein. In the story, Lady Hermione, who wore a dazzling opal in her hair, died shortly after the stone got sprinkled with a few drops of holy water. She was also accused of being a demon due to the events, thus relating opal to dark magic.
There is another story from the 19th Century, where Alfonzo XII, King of Spain, experienced a sudden storm of death in his family; his wife, grandmother, sister, and sister-in-law all died within a short interval after receiving an opal ring as a gift, even he suffered the same after wearing the ring himself.
The significance of black diamonds varies from place to place, so depending on which part of the world you are from, it can either be good or evil. In Italy, it is believed that if a married couple touched a black diamond, it would bring them good fortune. However, in ancient India, black diamonds were thought to symbolize death as they resembled the eye of a snake or spider.
Pearls symbolize purity, wisdom, and loyalty. But there is a belief that pearls should not be given to a bride on her wedding day as they can bring sadness to her marriage. This may be a connection from an old historical association of pearls and tears.
In ancient Japan, stories say that pearls were tears of mermaids and angels, and in ancient Greece, pearls were thought to be tears of the gods. So either case, pearls were associated with tears.
These are all stories, but it’s always said even the slightest sign of disbelief must not interfere in our happy moments. Hence, out of so many gemstone options, we can avoid all the above, just for self-satisfaction.
There are numerous birthstone ring designs for engagement with stones like emerald, sapphire, ruby, etc.
