3 OCTOBER 2024 || BIRTLEY COMMUNITY POOL, DURHAM
The Prince of Wales in his role as the Patron of Swim England, and Joint Patron of the Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales, visited Birtley Community Pool in Tyne and Wear.
The Birtley Community Pool was recently reopened and the visit was aimed at celebrating it and highlighting the importance of access to swimming.
The Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales through their Community Impact Programme, have been instrumental in connecting Birtley Community Pool with new partners to support their impressive efforts to get their local pool back up and running.
They've also helped local primary schools and young people to make use of the facilities, with a bursary for schools to subsidise the cost of swimming lessons as well as a bursary for local primary and secondary schools to enable local teenagers to train as lifeguards.
Additionally, they have supported to create a Community Outreach Officer role to be recruited who will maximise children’s participation in swimming, with a focus on children in years 2 and 3.
The Prince of Wales revealed that he missed the Paris Olympics because he did not want to bring Covid home to The Princess of Wales as she underwent chemotherapy.
He also revealed their children were inheriting the water-bug, saying:
‘Catherine and I both adore swimming. George loves scuberdiving. He was ten years old, we took him under, thinking he’d freak out, but he absolutely loved it. It’s just introduced him to the world of water.’
