Orange Is the New Black / Piper Chapman

This is an example of bi/pan erasure in Orange is the New Black. Piper Chapman, someone who has been married to a man and dated women refuses to label her sexuality. When coming out to her mom, she doesn’t use the word “bi,” but if her girlfriend thinks she is straight and her husband thinks she is gay, what is she?

I kind of thought that was really interesting as a character because we’ve had some really great, interesting gay characters on television, we’ve certainly had a hundred, million years of everybody being straight on TV too. I thought that bisexuals weren’t well represented. So as we were kind of figuring out who this guy was, I felt like that would be something really interesting to play with, certainly different than some of what we’ve seen on television.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend / Daryl Whitefeather 

In this episode, Daryl Whitefeather comes out to his employees as bi, and is given an immense amount of screen time to explore his sexuality without the writers treating it like a punch line. 

Daryl finds out that he is attracted to White Josh, and after denying that he is gay, finds out that he likes both sexes during a gym workout. He works through his sexuality by figuring out that he is a “bothsexual” and pursues a relationship with White Josh. The romance between the two is not pandering, nor hidden in the shadows. There are a diverse group of lgbt+ characters in this show, and the representation is unproblematic.

Bi!CW

Okay so maybe y'all have heard but the CW has introduced a bisexual character in The 100. A lead character, I believe. I don't watch The 100 however this gives me hope for a certain other character....People claim the CW is too scared to have lead characters come out as bisexual, I can't help but wonder if this is the CW giving them the finger....is there hope for Destiel after all?

You know what would have made Pushing Daisies better? If Chuck was actually a guy and Ned was bisexual, and everyone acted like it was normal.

Bisexual erasure, or the systematic minimization or dismissal of bisexual people, is a serious problem. In a 2009 study, 3.1% of Americans identify as bisexual, while only 2.5% of Americans identify as gay or lesbian. Bisexuals hold a slight majority in the population, and yet they compromise only 15% of LGBT characters on television.

The Gay-washing of characters from television shows is also happening, like Emily from Pretty Little Liars. She was written in the book as bisexual, yet in the television series someone made the conscious decision to have her portrayed as a lesbian. Now, the show seems to be backtracking and portraying Emily as a bisexual suddenly, but this seems to be for "shock value" rather than anything else, like character development or a realization of their mistake.
