Now the other can be empowering. The other can be something that we use as a rock to build ourselves up and make ourselves stronger. But many people try to convince us that it is what makes us lesser. Weaker. They are wrong. It took me many years to discover what bisexuality could mean to me because of those people. I was listening to a podcast the other day called “Making Gay History”. The episode featured one of the pioneers of equality, Joyce Hunter. She stated she found in her experience as a human that “we often see our differences before we see what makes us the same.” And that resonated with me. Generalizing, bisexuals don’t fit in anywhere. We aren’t gay enough to be with the gays. We aren’t straight enough to be with the heterosexuals. There aren’t safe havens and bisexual bars on every corner like there are with gay or straight bars. We are seldom found depicted in pop culture, movies, tv, or music. And why is that? A lot of that transcends into marriage. People presume that because someone has married the opposite of their gender, that the “bisexual phase” has gone away. That’s not how sexuality works. It’s not something that comes and goes when convenient. If it was, do you think many bisexual, or even on a grander scale, queer people, would choose to be? Being a whole person identifying as bisexual, there is a lot of validation that comes into others trying to comprehend our choices. “Well when was the last time you slept with a man?” “How long has it been since you slept with a woman?” These questions, knowingly or not, are using sex as a marker for proof. A bisexual woman can go 10 years without sleeping with a woman. That doesn’t make her any less. Our sexual escapades don’t quantify our orientation. As a bisexual male, there is a myriad of double standards. Bisexuality alone is the most isolated orientation, but when you put the roles of masculinity and expectation on a person, the critics are everywhere. “You have to choose.” “But like, you like one more than the other right?” “Oh it’s just a stepping stone.” I get that a lot of the ignorance comes out of trying to understand, but my sexuality is not something that needs to be digestible. We have to do better as a queer community in accepting everyone. We are the first to scream about equality, but so many of us are also the first to cast judgment, hold prejudice and segregate our chosen family based on how toned the body, the color of the skin, the lifestyle, the money, and everything else.
