I knew I’d done doomed myself to working on another project as soon as I posted Lykona. xD
So here’s Qaletaqa, nicknamed “Taqa”, the Medicine Bull buffalo of the Nomads. Where the buffalo herd neighboring Appleloosa have names like Thunderhooves and Little Strongheart, Taqa comes from a different herd with strange (to Equestrian ears) names that aren’t so simple to translate into one or two words.
Taqa is a gruff old bull, rather set in his ways and downright stubborn. Things have to be done just right. Especially with ceremonial rites and rituals. But he does love a good learner, especially when they butt heads with him a little bit. “Helps build character,” he says. Only Barry knows why Taqa left his herd, and doesn’t say much about it. Perhaps things in his herd were changing too fast for the old bull; Taqa won’t say. “Does not matter. My place is with Nomads now.”
Qaletaqa’s magic is that of the Totemic rites: Using Totems to connect with the spirits of almost any living thing, as long as he has something that is connected to that spirit. Totems can permit any of these: physical shapeshifting (or the illusion thereof), mental projection into the totem creature, and the transmission of advice or (not always helpful) information from totem animals or spirits. Taqa knows all three, but prefers to make use of the latter two, especially mental projection, which enables him to see through the senses of a given member of that totem’s type. He can choose to see through the senses of: bears, foxes, coyotes, ravens, and eagles.
I don’t know a whole lot about him yet, but it’ll come around as I get a better idea of what the Nomads are like and do. x3
