BY SAM BLUM Sep 11, 2025 The BTM scams usually follow a similar blueprint. First, the scammer messages their mark, often impersonating a government worker or claiming they work for a recognizable company like Microsoft. They claim that they’re collecting on an overdue bill, and tell their victim to pay in Bitcoin, guiding them to a nearby BTM. Sometimes, the social engineering component becomes more sinister, with thieves doctoring fake arrest warrants using AI, Matthew Hogan, a crypto crime specialist with the Connecticut State Police, tells Inc. “They’ll email you an arrest warrant. And you can tell, once we look at it, obviously, it’s Adobe [Photoshop], but they’ve used AI to enhance it. They’ll take the DOJ logo and throw it on there. They’ll manipulate signatures,” he explains. The end result has all the hallmarks of pulpy true crime, or a suburban nightmare. All told, Hardy says she’s stopped around seven crypto scams from taking place in her store since she started working there last September.

I've heard that gas station attendants in Connecticut are having to warn people going to  Bitcoin ATMs are being scammed. Is that happening here in Pennsylvania? What is being done to protect people at these Bitcoin ATMs?

Australia Emerges as a Leading Market for Bitcoin ATMs

Australia is rapidly becoming one of the fastest-growing markets for Bitcoin ATMs, with the country now ranking third globally in the number of crypto kiosks. The surge in installations has brought the total to nearly 1,200 machines, a significant jump from just 73 two years ago, according to data from Coin ATM Radar. This growth has positioned Australia just behind the United States, which leads with about 32,000 ATMs, and Canada, with approximately 3,000.

Bitcoin ATMs allow users to convert physical cash into digital assets stored in crypto wallets or withdraw fiat currency by selling cryptocurrencies. While the convenience and accessibility these machines offer have been praised for promoting financial inclusion, they have also sparked concerns over potential misuse. Australian authorities have identified crypto ATMs as a potential vulnerability for money laundering.

Australia Surpasses Asia in Crypto ATM Installations

Australia has surpassed Asia in the total number of crypto ATMs installed, with 364 machines as of January 2023. The country has consistently added Bitcoin ATMs over the last eight months and is on a crypto ATM installation spree.
