✿ for a sweet kiss on the cheek.
It’s finally over. Gaz is dead.
It’d taken almost three days - full days, mind, day and night and all, as many bloody hours crammed into that measure of time as bloody possible - and John’s more than aware that he looks like shit when he finally comes up the stairs.
Then again, he’s got all the rights in the world to, what with one of his oldest mates dying by his hand while holding it.
He’s got bruises along his wrist but that’s nothing compared to what’s been literally eating up Gary’s insides. The last little choking breath plays again in John’s mind when he walks past the couch where Zed’s drawing to the kitchen area to find something to drink.
He’s barely left Gaz’ side, all this time. But it’s hard to feel hungry when you’ve been in company of a bloody hunger demon, really. It’s the principle of the thing.
“Is it over?” Zed asks when John starts opening and closing cabinets, and he hears her get up and walk over to him in that annoyingly gentle way she’s got, like she’s watching your every move but not judging you for them.
A far cry from the way she’d yelled at him when he’d dragged Gary here, eh?
John doesn’t look at her; pours himself a glass.
He’s still got the body to deal with.
“Yeah”, he says roughly, downs that glass quickly with a grimace, and then refills it. “It’s over.”
Except it’s not. The Rising Darkness bollocks. It’s Gaz who’s bloody well over.
When he turns around to lean against the counter, she’s standing there still, watching him with concern. No doubt taking in the tired red eyes he’s sporting, among everyhing else that’s downright wrong with him.
He’s expecting her to say something that he’ll then respond to with all the cynicism he can muster, but she surprises him by taking a step closer and leaning in to kiss him gently on the cheek.
“He didn’t die alone”, she says. “I know he appreciated that. It eased his suffering.”
John falters as he stares at her, then looks away and finishes the second glass too.
