I don't trust the synopsis for Sad Teen Hotline. Why? this show subscribe to the Ryan Johnson school of subversion. Which is "Subversion for Subversion's sake", so the closer we come to sunday, the more I think that the "break up" will mean absolutely nothing.
It does? I don’t think it does! When it subverts a trope it’s for a reason, and even when it doesn’t, like with Curse of the Blood Moon and the unexpectedly straight way it played the “love curse” card, it’s still to keep things going in the direction they had already set, just with some detours and whatnot. Everything has been building up toward Tom needing to break up with Star to progress in his character arc (Junkin’ Janna, A Boy and His DC-700XE, several less direct but still meaningful moments in the past), and Doop-Doop set a very clear dichotomy between what Tom can bring to Star’s table, and what Marco can bring. Obviously the episode needs some sort of plot, a generic idea or goal or series of events supporting the break up, but I don’t see why the synopses would be wrong or inaccurate to such a level when a break up is the only possible outcome given Doop-Doop (unless they want to make Tomstar endgame and fix their relationship and make it stronger than ever, but that’s obviously not the point nor intention)! Star said “I need time to figure things out”, which included not being sure about wanting to spend an extended amount of time with Tom right now because she didn’t feel like that would have helped her understand what she wanted this new chapter of her life to be like, but then she immediately went to Marco, while Tom set out to have some good time alone, which is exactly what Junkin’ Janna and A Boy and His DC-700XE showed he needs the most. I think it’s safer than it has ever been before, relationships wise, to assume what’s going to happen. This is some Naysaya - to - Bonbon level of set up for the status quo to change.
