The mountain-sized asteroid that made a close pass by Earth on Monday has a small moon in tow, radar images released by NASA show. Asteroid 2004 BL86 flew about 745,000 miles from Earth, about three times farther than the moon. Although NASA has mapped 2004 BL86's path through our solar system in detail, they were surprised to see the moon, which seems to be about 230 feet across. This is small compared to the asteroid, which measures 1100 feet across and has a large enough area to cover five football fields. To date, researchers have discovered and tracked just over 12,000 near-Earth asteroids — just a tiny fraction of the total population, which is thought to number in the millions.

Астероид был необычным так же потому, что его размер примерно в 10 раз больше, чем большинство объектов, сближающихся с Землей, размеры которых варьируются от 15 до 30 метров в диаметре.

NASA сообщило, что около 16&х приблизительны к 2004 BL86 (от 200 метров и больше), являются двоичными, что означает основной астероид с меньшим астероидом (луной), вращающимся вокруг него.
