“Hybrid” from Black Lattice and Other Dystopian Tales
Running, running, stop. “Step back please,” said the canned voice from the regulator. Its blue metallic wand moved slowly back from her head. Amity was pulled out of line. No. This can’t happen. She stepped back from the metal hood. “Is something wrong?” She asked. “I need to make this flight. It’s important.” I’m a fugitive from the law. No really. The regulator’s flat voice said, “Irregularity in the motor cortex neurons.” Amity laughed, clutching her bag close to her side and pulling at her skirt. “That can’t be. I just started a great new job, and they tested me and said I was fine. I’m going there now.” I need to leave. Now. Stupid trash compactor. The regulator lifted its arm again, “Re-test required.” Sighing, she returned to stand close to the machine, lining her back up against the metal arm and allowed the wand to slowly move past. “Irregularity in the motor cortex neurons. The flight cannot continue with you on board.” “But that’s crazy!” she said, trying to argue with the pale blue box that looked like an oversized trash compactor. “You will speak to an adjustor momentarily. Please step out of line.”
