7/27/2013 - this is a picture I have taken of people who are trying to be supportive of the Trayvon Martin case. While I understand the sentiment (and it’s a good one), the problem with it lies in the fact that it is, in fact, a Black thing.
If Trayvon Martin was Thomas Martin, a White kid strolling through a gated community in a hoodie, George Zimmerman would not have been an issue because nothing would have happened. Marketing the discussion as “not a Black thing, or a White thing” removes the most important part of the conversation - the racial element.
Showing support is nice, but dismissing the racial element of the conversation will make it a half-ass discussion.
Don’t run away from the race part of the conversation, or else real change will never happen.
