We Black Folks Have ALWAYS Had Standards Of Our Own...
that have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with "respectability politics." This idea that everything that all Black people do is absolutely fine and beyond criticism from other Black people is utter bullshit!
Many of you trifling-apologists keep your fingertips at the ready to argue against any Black folks on tumblr who would hold our people to a standard of decorum of any kind. If this is YOU...
DON'T SHARE OR LIKE ANY POSTS from Marcus Garvey or Ida B. Wells or Noble Drew Ali or Septima Clark or Elijah Muhammad or Fannie Lou Hamer or Martin Luther King Jr. or Dorothy Height or Malcolm X or the Black Panther Party or the Nation of Islam or... any number of the Black s/heroes we've been commemorating this past February. ALL OF THEM have been critical of our people, at some point in their speeches and writings. The fact that you don't realize that tells a lot about YOU and, perhaps, YOUR low morals standards self-esteem and expectations for yourself and your people.
If white folks disappeared from the earth tomorrow, would Black Earth have a need for police or jails? Okay then.
I'm not saying "respectability politics" isn't a real and unhealthy phenomenon among Black folks... I'm just saying not EVERYTHING that ALL BLACK PEOPLE do is ALL GOOD. And not every criticism of Black folks by other Black folks falls under the category of respectability politics.
SOME SHIT IS JUST UNWORTHY OF US AS THE ORIGINAL PEOPLE - THE MAKERS THE OWNERS THE CREAM OF THE PLANET EARTH.
And if you don't believe in your heart of hearts that Black people are TOO GOOD to be engaged in certain behaviors in a certain context... unfollow this blog. Please.
I have no desire to take all Black people back to Africa; there are blacks who are no good here and will likewise be no good there.
~ The Honorable Marcus Garvey, U.N.I.A. (Universal Negro IMPROVEMENT Association)
