Me when I decide to write another fanfiction because it’s super specific and I know I won’t be able to find it anywhere:

I gotta be honest. It’s to the point where it laughable to me that people were on this app complaining about the lack of representation for black women in fan fiction and now that there are more black writers coming out and putting out some amazing content, y’all aren’t supporting it.

You read it but don’t share, comment, etc...you drop a heart on it but then keep it moving and then be the same ones on anon in their inbox asking about more content or more parts to certain fics that they’ve written.

Lack of support and interaction is really making a lot of people lose motivation to keep writing.

But y’all wondering why “your fave writer” isn’t writing anymore. Smh pathetic

black writer problem: debating the pros and cons of having a white main character vs. a black main character

The main character for one of the novels that I am working on is a dark-skinned black girl. Her closest friends are an Afro-Latino boy and an Asian girl. It is a science-fiction story that focuses on identity and self-preservation.

As I open up more and discuss my writing with other people, especially this novel, I am told to hurry up while the activism, black power, POC awareness trend is still hot or I won’t get published. Or I am dismissed because of course a black female writer will have a main character that is a black girl. It’s frustrating and disheartening.

At times I feel like I am writing the story I think people want to hear and not the story I want to tell.

i want to put my all into my afrofuturistic novel about intelligent black kids that change the world but then a voice in my head shouts “that’s not marketable! no one wants to read that!” and then i go bed because it feels like the right thing to do
