Black Box Warnings
Lactic acidosis (LA) is a rare life threatening condition that can occur due to Metformin accumulation in the body. Impaired renal function can cause Metformin to accumulate and substantially increase the risk for LA. LA has been labeled as a black box warning by the FDA due to its fatal nature. LA causes death in 50% of cases, and most of those deaths have been linked to renal insufficiency.
