It’s National Black Cat Awareness Month! 🐾 Aside from the toothy faced grin of a jack-o-lantern on every front porch across America, perhaps the most telltale sign that Halloween is on its way are the cardboard cutouts of black cats taped in windows and perched on neighborhood fences. Just how did black cats become a Halloween icon? Though many modern Halloween customs trace their origins back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, black cats entered the picture much more recently. There are lots of theories on the matter, but most all of them fall in line with the notion that witches could shape shift and would usually disguise themselves as black cats. Thus, when Halloween tradition evolved to include the “wicked witch,” black cats were included. Unfortunately, this means that black cats often suffer cruelty during Halloween season. To keep them out of harm’s way, it’s a good idea to keep all cats indoors in the weeks leading up to October 31st.
