Reflection

From the start of the semester I’ve been really happy about a class like this being available at CCA.  When I think about “making art that matters”, a phrase that is associated with the school, what we’ve done and learned about in the class come to mind, especially with the presentation of the final projects.  They were a combination of art with current events, current events that are effecting minorities in a life or death fashion.  And because of this, I feel that all the things we were striving to understand within the class were more important than other CCA classes I’ve taken, within my major and outside of my major.  CCA should strive to include more classes like this if “making art that matters” is as important to them as it seems like they want it to be.

Introduction

My name is Aigne French, I am from Philadelphia,PA.I am in my 3rd year at CCA, majoring in Fashion Design. I’ve been interested in designing since about 12-13 years old. I started off by going to thrift stores and purchasing secondhand items and then reconstructing them making them to my own style. It wasn’t until high school summer of 2011 where I was a high school intern at a thrift store/ boutique store in my hometown. That’s where I first learned how to actually work a sewing machine and was able to deconstruct a commercial vest and then getting a pattern and making my own version in this cool batik print fabric. That summer molded me for the love of actually constructing my own garments.

Taking the Black Death Matters course is important to me because I want to be more aware of what’s going on with the world and the danger within my race. I feel like I am obligated to know of these things because it not only happen to males in my race but women as well. Hoping to spread awareness and to educate not only my race who are unaware but those outside of it, and  want to help myself in better learning of ways to get the information out to others peacefully and efficiently. With only being in this class for 2 weeks I got a great deal of information of it and am excited for what comes forward. I enjoy hearing my peers talk about their point of views because everyone comes from different backgrounds.
