I really love to come up with music video/story concepts for songs and one playlist I have a story for every song on is my “songs for floating in space playlist” and I wanted to share the songs and the stories I care up with for them
Songs For Floating In Space
Uncharted Worlds (Mass Effect)
You’re no stranger to space; you’ve spent half your life there. Some things about being the captain of an exploration ship tend to get old, like the long trips and endless expanse of nothingness outside your window, but one thing that never gets old is the jump to hyperspace before every new mission begins. You give the commands to your crew to begin, but it’s only a formality. You all know each other so well you might as well be a family. At your command, your navigator sends you to lightspeed and your ship disappears from view as you venture out into the vast expanse of space.
Stranger Things (Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein)
You’re a lone pilot of a small cargo ship. Your job is to deliver things from Point A to Point B without any hazards. Oftentimes, it’s a relatively safe and boring job, but as you’re flying through an asteroid field, you get the feeling that something is following you, something big and dangerous stalking you through the asteroid belt. Your paranoia grows as you realize that you are merely prey to this creature, it sees you no differently than a lion would a gazelle. You begin to wonder if you’ll make it to your destination.
Emergency lights are flashing, alarms are ringing, and debris is floating through your ship. You would be doing something about it, but you died when your oxygen ran out and you’re currently floating, unaware, as your damaged ship goes further into the cold, dark abyss of space.
You’re alone in your space ship, and suddenly a blinding light shines into your window. You would think it was beautiful, but when your vision clears you realize that you’ve stumbled upon something horrifying, something you would never imagine in your worst nightmare. It’s a horror almost beyond your comprehension, eldritch and arcane.
This is your final stand. You know you have to sacrifice yourself for the greater good, and even though it pains you to leave without telling your loved ones, it’s better than letting them all die. You try to reassure yourself that this is for the greater good as you get ready to leave everyone behind.
The Son of Flynn (Daft Punk)
You’ve been in training for so long and you’re so anxious to begin going on real missions. You act a bit cocky, messing with the other recruits, but you fall silent in awe as you see the beauty of space for the first time. As you stand in the hangar you feel like you’ve made the right decision, that you could spend the rest of your life with a view like the one before you right now.
You’ve just died on a mission, and your last request was for your crew members to give you a space burial and release you out of the airlock. Your crew members are somber as they watch your body float through the abyss, tears on their faces as the pilot makes the jump to hyperspace. As the ship disappears from view, ice crystals form on your face as you float lifelessly through space.
Let It Be (Blackmill ft. Veela)
You go through your morning routine on the space station: forcing yourself out of bed, fixing yourself a cup of coffee, and staring out the view of your window. You can see a nebula with a star beginning to form in the middle right outside your window. Even though it will take billions of years to see any changes, you swear it looks different from yesterday. As you wipe some coffee off the pristine white table, you wonder what your day will have in store.
This time, you’re flying through space without a spaceship. You feel like you might be in a dream, because you can breathe just fine. Celestial objects are everywhere you can see, planets and stars and galaxies and quasars and nebulas as far as the eye can see. It’s peaceful to just watch and float, but you want to see more. You start to move around, and after a bit you’ve got the hang of flying. You’re moving at a relaxed pace, watching the stars and planets pass by as you go further and further into the universe. The further you go, the more breathtaking everything you see is. You want to see the entirety of the universe, and hope that you don’t wake up before you get to the end.
Writing the Circles/Orgone Tropics (Of Montreal)
You went to a sketchy strip club on an asteroid to find a notorious criminal, but you made the mistake of getting a drink without knowing what you were ordering. Little did you know, it was laced with psychedelic drugs and now you’re having a very bad trip. The DJ is playing music that sounds like it’s in slow motion to you, and the floor keeps moving up and down like the ocean. You try desperately to find help, but you’re too anxious to do anything. As you fall down to the floor, the person you were looking for takes you as their prisoner in the back room of the club.
100 Moons (Savanna Saturn and Jon Marco)
You recently lost someone you loved dearly, and they haunt your dreams. Tonight, you dream of floating through space, always trying to touch them, but they’re just outside of your reach.
Otherside (Perfume Genius)
All of your plans to stop the artifact that’s going to destroy the solar system have failed. The only way to save your planet is to get the artifact, far, far away. Your final plan is to send it to lightspeed, but it won’t work remotely. Someone has to be on the ship to send it into hyperspace manually. Knowing this, you start to ready your ship to fly into an empty area far away from Earth. As the song hits THAT part, you pull the lever and go into hyperspace, leaving Earth behind forever. The stars passing you by in a blur reflect in your eyes as a single tear rolls down your cheek.
