These earrings were made intentionally with the black and brown beads to show more representation for my LGBT & Two Spirit Afro-Indigenous and QTPOC relatives. LGBT pride has historically been euro-centric and white washed. The issues of QTPOC and Indigenous folks are often unheard and therefore unaddressed. We need to center folks with underrepresented identities and focus on moving forward with an intersectional approach that invites every aspect of their identity to the space. ▫️ To all of my Afro-indigenous and Black Indian Two Spirits, I’m sorry if you’ve ever felt isolated within your different communities. Y’all are sacred and your ancestral strength is unmatched. I hope you know that this work is for YOU and celebrates EVERY part of you. Your nativeness is valid. Your blackness is valid. Your queerness is valid. Y’all are beautiful and I will work to support you in any way that I can. 🥰 ❤️ 🧡 💛 💚 💙 💜 ▫️ #twospiritartist #pride2019 #nativemade #supportindigenousartists #qtpoc #afroindigenous #blackindian #blacknative #lgbt #lgbtq #indigiqueer #beadwork #beadedearrings #smallbusiness #queerkwe #queerkwedesigns #anishinaabe #ndn #lgbtpride🌈 (at Ann Arbor, Michigan) https://www.instagram.com/p/BylHUBZFFJI/?igshid=h0b4j1dr94b6
The first of my many, self-beaded creations, especially since there’s barely any Afro-Indigenous Beadworkers out here.
This beautiful piece of medicine that I'm wearing around my neck is from no other Tashina Lee Emery. When I’m away from my elders in the southeastern woodlands (whether Chahta/Choctaw or not) this acrylic incased medicine reminds me of the ones like my grandfather, great-grandfather and cousin Sunny. @mxedgirlprobs It’s Native owned, Native made. Check our sister out : https://www.tashinaemery.com/
