Black Robots showing tonight at The Menil Collection for BYOB (Bring Your Own Beamer) from 9pm to 9:30pm! . . . The Menil Collection and Aurora Picture Show co-present this lively, annual evening of community-sourced projections covering the Menil Collection main building’s façade. Originally inspired by artist Rafaël Rozendaal’s Berlin events and the spread of global BYOB gatherings, this has become a Houston tradition for participants and audiences alike since 2013. This outdoor event is free and open to the public to attend. Viewers are encouraged to bring picnic blankets and picnics. “Black Robots” ... 72 x 36 inches mixed media. Black Robots is a socio-political piece that parallels social engineering with computer networking models. Social engineering is the use of centralized planning in an attempt to manage social change and regulate the future development and behavior of a society. It is also the art of gaining access to systems or data by exploiting human psychology, rather than by breaking in or using traditional hacking techniques. Both methods of social engineering have been used on a wide scale basis to destabilize societies for many years. Black Robots, the short film, was co-wrote, directed and edited by @imareelchick and debuted @houstonmaac during my solo exhibition ARTis The Imitation of Life. “Isotopes” ... acrylic on canvas Set of four Isotopes are atoms which share the same name and chemical properties, but have different masses. Isotopes also have the same number of protons and electrons, but a different number of neutrons. Similar to people, you can think of protons and neutrons as the same kind of particle with one key difference: the protons are positively charged, while neutrons carry no electrical charge. This means protons can “feel” electric or magnetic fields, while neutrons cannot. In December of 2016 I lost my proton, my father Clarence Artis. I suddenly felt as if I was the neutron, devoid of electrical charge after witnessing the molecular structure of my family destabilize. Isotopes is my creative interpretation of the gradual reduction of man into subatomic particles. Shout out to my fellow artist @nati_dmod for coming out and supporting!
