Brew #232: Blacks of Kinsale Yellow Sub White IPA

ABV: 5%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Herbs, lemon, coriander, citrus

Pour: Cloudy amber with frothy white head reducing to skim

Taste: It’s all peppery herb upfront, lots of coriander too but cut with that acidic orange peel for a herbs and fruits sunday roast stuffing extravaganza. Lovely hints of orange with a decent bite at the finish and a nice peppery aftertaste. I really liked this one, it reminded me of Metalman’s Sage & Pepper Saison (Brew #201).

Brew #195: Blacks of Kinsale Simcoe Red IPA

ABV: 5%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Honeycomb, malt

Pour: Deep ruddy brown with a tan froth reducing to skim

Taste: My goodness! This is all about sweet malts and toffee with that honeycomb coming in underneath. Delicious and a bit rich but very more-ish. Nice sticky toffee puddingness going on and a lovely little bite at the finish to balance the sweetness. Best of the Discovery Series so far I think.

Brew #194: Blacks of Kinsale Mosaic West Coast IPA

ABV: 6.5%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Cedar, grapefruit

Pour: Cloudy amber with a finger of off white froth

Taste: Fresh pine blast at first quickly melting into a honeyed fruit wash and ending on a light enough hop bite. After taste of passionfruit. Good American style IPA.

Brew #193: Blacks of Kinsale EXP431 Session IPA

ABV: 4.3%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Honeydew melon, grass

Pour: Opaque amber with a disappearing fizzy froth

Taste: Light fruity punch moving into a very soft bite. Pleasant but a bit non descript. Possibly a bad bottle as it went flat very quickly, no head and no carbonation. Based on what I tasted here this is a perfectly reasonable session ale but this particular sup was lacking any depth.

Brew #189: Blacks of Kinsale Overkill Imperial Black IPA

ABV: 9.5%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Watermelon, honey, malt

Pour: Tan black with tan froth reducing to skim

Taste: Big tropical burst of sunshine up front with light malt underneath. Ends on a good piney hop kick with a medium dry bite. Aftertaste of grapefruit. A big hitter and one to savour at 9.5%.

Brew #152: Blacks of Kinsale The Session Ale

ABV: 3.5%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Pine, honey, orange

Pour: Golden amber, clear with a sliver of white froth

Taste: Light, piney wash with a nice crisp bite. Mild sweet malt notes in the middle. Good balance and it does what it says on the tin - a light, refreshing easy drinker.

Brew #151: Blacks of Kinsale Model T Stout

ABV: 5%

Served: Off the shelf

Aroma: Chocolate malt

Pour: Cola black with a sliver of tan froth

Taste: Warm chocolate upfront with lovely bitter coffee undertones. finishes on a slightly chalky roasted flavour. A good solid stout, i’ll be back for more.

Brew #124: Blacks of Kinsale World’s End Chocolate Vanilla Imperial Stout

ABV: 8.5%

Served: Off the shelf

Aroma: Chocolate, vanilla

Pour: Deep ruby black with fizzing tan skim

Taste: Rich dark chocolate hit upfront with any bitterness cut down by the vanilla. Finishes on a creamy coffee kick and slight dryness. Vanilla on the aftertaste. An indulgent, luxurious sup and well worth it.

Notes: 500ml bottle, Fairtrade cacao husks, Madagascan vanilla pods.
