Is there some reason everyone would rather focus on you for not having a perfectly written, all-inclusive post that encompasses all genders, rather than take a fucking moment to reflect on the actual issue you're addressing? Because when I read it, the first thing I did was cringe and recall all the horror stories I've heard about fangirls groping Markiplier (and it, apparently, not being a 'big deal' because ???) or the mess that is the Supernatural/J2 fandom.
Because they’d rather not acknowledge that some female fans need to be reminded to acknowledge common decency and personal space. Because it might mean that we’d have to acknowledge that female fan behavior can be (and sometimes IS) just as problematic as some male fan behavior, and should be addressed and condemned the same way.
They’d rather make it an issue about gendered language, rather than acknowledging that issue focus is important when it’s relevant to the problem being discussed.
And the non-existent gender binary doesn’t even make the list as part of the issue. “Female fans” encompasses all fans who identify as female, whether wholly or in part. If I said “just problematic cis-female fans,” it ignores an entire group of people, implying that nonbinary and transgender fans are either excluded from the discussion wholesale or incapable of displaying problematic behavior. Both are wrong. Plus, again, it distracts from the issue at hand.
Someone earlier said it perfectly: it’s the “not ALL men” response to feminist posts decrying problematic male behavior, only making it “not ALL female fans” somehow makes it okay. (Even though I was careful in my original post and in subsequent reblogs to state that in no way was I generalizing that ALL female fans are anything. I deliberately said SOME several times, but people chose to ignore this.)
I am all for gender equality and tearing down harmful stereotypes. But that means holding EVERYONE accountable for their actions, including calling my own gender out on their bad behavior when it becomes necessary.
