Yang- Ruby’s older half-sister. For unknown reasons, her mother left her and her father right after Yang was born. Her father remarried to Summer Rose, and had Ruby. The family was well off with Yang’s father working as a teacher at a middle school and Summer working around town, doing jobs for others. Unfortunately, one day Summer never came back from one of her jobs she was a given. With only her father working (and with having shut down after Summer’s death) life fell on hard times. Unbeknownst to her father, Yang started to skip school to try and find ways to help her family (selling things or sometimes stealing things). Eventually, she was able to find a job at the factories, fixing up machines since she could squeeze into small places that adults couldn’t reach and fix.

After a while, her father found out that Yang was not attending school. He tried to get her to go back to school. Yang still keep skipping school to go work to help out her family. Her father finally gave up trying to send her to school and started to try and teach her himself. This did not end well either, since both Yang and her father were both tired after work, and Yang just outright refused to learn since she was more concerned with making sure Ruby stayed in school and that she kept up with her studies so that she herself didn’t have to start working like her sister. While Yang working in the factories lead to the family being able to make ends meet (as well as Ruby selling little trinkets she makes), it also lead to Yang becoming functionally illiterate (able to read and write, but not on a level she can function in the everyday world).

At first, Yang worked on fixing any machines that became broken, squeezing into places most people couldn’t get into. As she grew older, not only was she fixing up machines, but also working with them. While working, Yang usually keeps her hair tied up and under a hat, keeping it away from all the fast machines around her. While she does her best to prevent injury to herself, there are moments when she can do nothing about it. She has been injured many times, the worse of them coming from an explosion when she was twelve, leaving her with some burn scars on parts of her back and arms, mostly on her left side. edit: She usually keeps the scars hidden with her clothes, not really wanting anyone to see them.

Working alongside with her is Jaune. Like Yang, he started to work to help his family and does many of the same jobs as Yang. The two become friends and help out each other when they can (especially when it comes to helping Ruby).

One day, while heading out to work, Yang takes a quick peek at a circus that is in in town. One of the places she checks out is freak show. It is there she sees Blake (due to her cat ears, known as ‘the cat girl’). Yang takes interest in her, but quickly had to leave due to work. The next day (the last day the circus will be there) after seeing Blake for a second time, Yang started to head to work. *She then suddenly runs into a girl, Penny, on her way there. Penny tells her about someone who would change her life, giving her clues as to where the person is, and also describes the person also. Her description of the person sounds very much like Blake to Yang, which only makes her interest in Blake grow. Before she can ask Penny more about it, Penny disappears, leaving Yang to think about Blake and what she was told. After thinking about it all day long, Yang decides to listen to what Penny said, followers her clues, and finds Blake.

After finding Blake, she brings her back to her house. Yang spends her time slowly getting bringing Blake out of her shell, and trying to give her as much as normal life as possible, all the while keeping the fact she is from the circus, and her cat ears, a secret.
