like i said in those tags i never look at my AO3 stat page, it’s inordinately depressing because of the type of niche I occupy as a writer and tbh always will be. focusing on numbers kills my motivation (I even run a skin that hides stats unless you click on the actual fic)
but that post made me do it for giggles and i was also shocked to see how demands of prescience snuck up into my top 5
that fic is ancient and languished in obscurity for years until all of a sudden i started getting a rash of kudos around the time the Villenueve movie was announced and again when the trailer came out
mind you it’s also based on the 2000 Sci-Fi Channel miniseries which has been out of print for over 15 years at this point (I should know because I went through hell trying to replace my messed up region 1 Director’s Cut DVDs--and it still hasn’t seen a North American Blu-Ray release, at all and to my knowledge has never streamed anywhere)
I can only guess that people are reading (or re-reading) the book because of the new movie and running to find fic but it’s crazy. i think it’s very easy as someone who primarily writes rarepairs and polyships for video games and has virtually no meaningful interaction with these giant tv/movie fandoms for the most part to not be aware of the massive difference in traffic levels these forms of media get, even for smaller/older movies.
