The Connection Under the Hood
Single Effect: Blast Damage Down [20%] & Fog [65%] (One / 3 turns)
MLB Effect: Blast Damage Down [22.5%] & Fog [100%] (One / 3 turns)
Blast Damage Down will reduce damage from enemy Blast attacks. Note that Blast Damage Down is applied to the enemy target, while the comparable Blast Damage Cut is applied to the equipped character.
Fog is a Status Ailment that will cause the afflicted target to have a 25% chance to miss their attacks.
TLDR: “The Connection Under the Hood” has a ton of flaws. Everything it does can be done better by other memoria in the game, and its effects are very lackluster. You can use it for protective purposes, for a slight offensive one (if you have Addict Killer), and maybe for negating Evades-- but again, you’re better off using other memoria instead. This belongs in the Memoria Vault Jail on the off chance it becomes really good in the future, but I wouldn’t blame you if you straight up used it as Enhancement Fodder.
Review: “The Connection Under the Hood” has some issues. It has the potential to protect your characters from damage (and a possible potential to increase your damage) but it also suffers from lackluster effects.
The first thing to say is that, when this memoria is max awakened, it can function as a Stat Stick. Stat Sticks are a term used for Active memoria that beef up a character’s defense through the passive stats, not through its buffs. These kind of memoria are very helpful in Mirrors, where some actives serve little more than, well, “stat sticks.” A Stat Stick can be useful in some PVE as well, although not quite as good as it is for Mirrors. If a character has low DEF/HP but you don’t want to use up a passive memoria slot to increase their defense through outright effects, then a memoria like this can give the character a little more padding while keeping their passive slots free for extra damage.
So the passive stats are good here. But then we get to its effects. Blast Damage Down isn’t as useful as more straightforward debuffs such as Attack Down or Damage Down. Like the name says, it only lowers the damage the Blast disks will do. Many Witches, Uwasa, and some enemy PVE Magical Girls will use one single attack along two blast attacks (one horizontal, one vertical), so Blast Damage Down can be used to reduce the damage done by such a boss by two thirds. However, some bosses won’t do this-- some might use three single attacks, some might only use one blast attack, ect. So in general, this isn’t very helpful or reliable. Additionally, the amount of Blast Damage Down it gives is pretty low. This might be because it lasts for three turns, and the only other memoria to compare it to would be:
(Limited 4*) “The Light to Move Forward Without Hesitation” Attack Down [17.5%] & Status Ailment Resistance Down [7.5%] (All / 3 Turns)
Which gives less Attack Down at 17.5% than “The Connection Under the Hood” giving 22.5% for Blast Damage Down. However, the benefit of “The Light to Move Forward Without Hesitation” is at least it’s Attack Down will effect all the potential disks the enemy uses.
However, Blast Damage Down isn’t the only effect this memoria gives. It also has a 100% chance of inflicting Fog for three turns. Unfortunately, this also has some issues. Fog only has a 25% chance of causing the enemy to miss, so it’s possible the enemy might not miss a single attack in one turn. Additionally, it’s one of the weakest Status Ailments in the game: it doesn’t increase the damage done by the afflicted target’s weak element, and it doesn’t prevent HP Regen by the afflicted target.
When put together, the Fog chance could work and prevent your character from getting hit by attacks, and combined with the Blast Damage Down and the high DEF stats, “The Connection Under the Hood” might do an okay job of protecting your character.
However, there’s another memoria to consider:
(4*) “The Way Home after the Rain (Mito)” Attack Down [50%] & Defense Down [45%] (All / 1 Turn)
This bad boy does it better-- it lasts for one turn, but it gives a high amount of Attack Down (to all targets and not just one), it also has good DEF stats, and you can even use it to increase your damage more reliably! And hey, speaking of damage, let’s go back to how “The Connection Under the Hood” can increase your offensive output.
Consider the effect “Damage Up Versus Enemies Affected with Status Ailments” (hereby called “Addict Killer”). This effect will increase the amount of damage done if there is a Status Ailment present. Unfortunately Addict Killer has some issues regarding multiple tile targets, but it can be used at least to increase your damage without having to rely on Attack Up or Damage Up/Damage Increase, especially if you’re close to hitting the cap on them.
However, this does also require some planning. If your character doesn’t have it passively through Spirit Enhancement (the list includes: Corbeau, Holy Alina, Holy Mami, Yuuna Kaharu, Konoha & Hazuki, Livia Medeiros, Hanna Sarassa, Yozuru Sasame, and Ui Tamaki), then you’ll have to equip some form of memoria with it. The active forms of Addict Killer are all limited, and the only passive memoria is:
(4*) “Stance on Art” Anti-Poison [100%] & Damage Up Versus Enemies Affected With Status Ailments [35% ]
Which offers very little offense-wise outside of that Addict Killer effect.
Lastly, there is one other offensive benefit: as a Status Ailment, Fog will negate Evade. This memoria lasts for three turns which is great as a form of negating pesky Evades-- it means you don’t need to worry about who is attacking the target and therefore the memoria can be equipped on any character.
Unfortunately, there is still a flaw here. “The Connection Under the Hood” only gives 100% Fog chance when it’s max awakened. If it’s a single copy or only 4/5, then it gives you 65% chance of Fog which is... not great. Additionally, there is another better memoria in the game that can do this and is way easier to max awaken:
(3*) “The Two Copies” Poison [100%] (One / 3 Turns)
This memoria can be purchased through Mirrors Coins and is the cheapest Mirrors memoria for sale.
So to summarize: this memoria can do a lot of things, but none of them very well, and there is almost always a better memoria to use. Even its DEF stats are outdown by a lot of memoria in the game, including Event Reward memoria.
So overall... This is below average. You can use it in PVE if you want (or if you have a ton of copies of it from your rolls), but it’s also not great. I am not going to go so far to say that it is outright Enhancement Fodder, but I wouldn’t blame you if you you used “The Connection Under the Hood” as such.
