Bleach Chapter 644 Review

One battle finally ends and another begins.

*I’ve been gone for a while but I’m back now!*

After several months (in reader time), Mayuri and Pernida’s fight has ended, in large part due to Nemu’s sacrifice. What’s left of Pernida explodes everywhere as Mayuri perfects his badass walking away from an explosion technique. Suddenly, with Nemu’s brain still in hand, he collapses to the ground. At first I thought it was out of grief or some sort of existential crisis, but it turns out a few stray nerves from Pernida make their way to Mayuri’s legs. He doesn’t seem terribly by it and manages to get some help from a somber-looking Ikkaku and Yumichika. Mayuri tells them to open the body rejuvenation chambers Nemu brought with them, and lo and behold Hitsugaya and Matsumoto emerge from them, looking very much alive. Although it took a while they’re good as new, albeit at a cost to their lifespans (which is vague, considering shinigami seem to be immortal unless they die in battle, but I digress). Hitsugaya offers his thanks as Ikkaku and Yumichika awkwardly put their captain in a body chamber. After putting Mayuri in a chamber they drop to their knees and display their gratitude for him saving Kenpachi. All of the appreciation and niceness obviously makes Mayuri sick to his stomach and he takes solace in the fact that he’s finally created something that surpasses Urahara before dreaming of Nemu.

Right on cue we see Urahara, Shunsui, and the others who are slowly getting picked off one-by-one by Lille Barro. Rukia, Renji, Hinamori, and Nanao are the only non-captains remaining and Shinji seems more exasperated by the situation than anything else. From far and away, Lille goes into full predator mode, enjoying the fear that he’s causing. Shunsui, getting fed up at the damage their sustaining, decides to use himself as a target to get a lock on Lille’s location. Lille delivers the best line of the chapter, calling Shunsui “an idiot, a lunatic, or both” before taking a straight shot to the chest. It’s at this moment that Shinji is officially done with everything. Lille officially sees this as the beginning of the end for the shinigami before hearing someone singing. He turns to find Shunsui, with his shikai released, right before he attacks. Lille evades the attack but his gun isn’t so lucky. Shunsui, who’s seemed to already recover from his wound, puts on his game face and prepares to take down the Sternritter.

I love a Mayuri battle as much as the next guy, but I’m glad we’re finally moving on from his fight. Pernida didn’t make a compelling villain and his (its?) powers got more ridiculous as the battle dragged on. Shoutout to Nemu, though.

This chapter was a great one, in part because it packed in more plot development than some volumes have. Toshiro and Matsumoto are alive! Kenpachi’s getting healed! What’s left of the Gotei 13 is dropping like flies! When Kubo’s pacing is bad it’s incredibly frustrating but when it’s good it’s great.

It’ll be interesting to see whether Shunsui follows through on his fight with Lille Barro. The Sternritter is undoubtedly powerful but Shunsui is one of the heaviest hitters in the game right now, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he passes the battle off to Shinji, who was a prominent presence this chapter and has a zanpakuto that would throw off Lille’s abilities. There’s also a possibility that Shunsui might start struggling and open up the opportunity for Ukitake to make his grand return. Basically I’m holding out for a Shunsui-Haschwalth showdown and a skirmish with Lille gets in the way of that. I’m also interested to see whether or not it gets explained as to how Shunsui shook off a bullet to the chest so quickly. An as-of-yet unseen game from his zanpakuto, perhaps, or even a science-y trick from Urahara? Either way I hope it gets addressed.

This is one of those chapters has me excited moving forward. Next week could continue Shunsui’s battle or check in on characters we haven’t seen in a while, like Ichigo and company or Uryu. I’m guessing we’ll get one or two more chapters checking up on everybody before diving headfirst into another battle, if only because Mayuri and Pernida’s was so long.

Bleach Chapter 644 Thoughts

"I have your weapon now. Your life is next." Out with the old fight, in with the new fight. I thought this chapter was good. The fight between Mayuri and Pernida did in fact finish, so now it's time for Mayuri to rest easy, along with a brain of Nemu. This seems like a right time to do, since well, Halloween is around the corner, so let's make some reference to it. Ok, that's most likely not the case, but I like to think of that. Then, Mayuri revealed two body containers and surprise, surprise, Hitsugaya and Rangiku are alive. I knew Kubo wouldn't have it to kill him off, let alone two of named characters. Speaking of holidays reference, Mayuri felt like it was Thanksgiving with many thanks given by others to him. He even managed to save room for Kenpachi, so this also show more of his kinder side, especially going to sleep with her "perfect" experiment. It does imply that he has died but I doubt that's the case. I see it more like a long rest. Either way, I like this whole thing went down. Mayuri doesn't really get this much gratitude until now, so he deserved it. We finally shifted the focus to others running and one of the Quincy was on sniper spot to shoot one of them down. Kyouraku wasn't having it, so he snuck in and took one of his weapon. Now we have a new fight inbound for the next chapter. I wonder how long this fight will last. Overall, a good chapter with Mayuri showing his kinder side of helping his comrades, and the fight is over, only to go to the next one. Let's hope it's not that long unless a lot of important revelation kicks in, but I doubt it.
