A Game of Thrones Anthology with works by @astolat
These are some of my favourite astolat Game of Thrones fics in book form.
(I've included "Gifts", "Pretty", "Traveling Far", "The Next Time", "Raised by Wolves" and "Let The River Run")
More pictures and me yappin' under the cut
Each work begins with a title page that not only shows the fic's title but also includes a small illustration (mostly medieval-style heraldry) based on the pairing(s) of that particular story (e.g. a lion for House Lannister, a sun and moon for Tarth, ...). These images were sourced from rawpixel and further edited and combined.
I also picked the title color for each fic from a medieval frame I used on the following page. It is from a ca. 1450 Bible, which you can view here: https://www.getty.edu/art/collection/object/103RTN#full-artwork-details. I cleaned it up so that the background and original text are gone and I could use just the frame.
The little b/w chapter start illustrations also appear in the header of each body text page. like this:
and on the cover like this:
The font used for the body text is EB Garamond, for dropcaps Initials TFB and for titles 2013 Albertus. (Better visible in this screenshot of a spread.)
I really love how this came out - especially how using that medieval frame makes it look like a book of fairytales.
As always: Many thanks to the Renegade Bindery Discord Server @renegadeguild for opening up the world of fanbinding to me. And thanks to astolat for writing such beauties!
I've bound Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma: An Integrative Approach by @mouseonamoose. This is one of my all time favourite fics, written with such love and care. I'm so grateful it exists.
I did the typeset last summer and finally got around to the actual binding. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the amazing community at the @renegadepublishing Discord server. Your enthusiasm, wealth of knowledge, and helpful resources have been so important to this lurker :)
PS: And @mouseonamoose - if you're interested, I've bound a second copy that I can send your way. Feel free to message me about it!
The author copy arrived so I can finally post this! This is the first time I've drawn my own illustrations for a fic bind :D
Here are the full cover and the title page:
For every chapter I chose one important item to depict on the first page. Here are a few of them :)
I also made a little montage of all illustrations for the endpapers
more details and easter eggs under the cut
Here are screenshots of every single chapter start page (because I want to show them off).
Maybe you can recognize each item from the story. (go read the fic if you haven't already)
My favourite little drawing is this one:
it's the book Draco is reading about the fish-people of Atlantis. and let me tell you. I'm quite chuffed with how ridiculous I made their queen look.
And now a fun little detail for those of you who speak German:
For the design of the healing salve, I included a little drawing of a witch with backpain (a bit hard to see because of the chromatic abberation I layered on top...). There is a kind of backpain that is called "Hexenschuss" in German, which literally translates to "witch's shot" (the name comes from the old belief that a witch had struck you with an arrow). adding that little detail gave the design a bit of extra personality ^^
And one more glamour shot of the finished book to wrap things up
As always: Many thanks to the Renegade Bindery Discord Server @renegadeguild for opening up the world of fanbinding to me. And thank you to @letteredlettered for writing this beautiful story and letting me bind it :)
My next astolat bind! Royal Flush got it's own book :)
This bind looks intentionally very similar to the Game of Thrones Anthology I already posted. The design elements used in the typeset are mostly the same.
More images under the cut :)
Each chapter beginning includes that gorgeous frame from a ca. 1450 bible, which you can view here: https://www.getty.edu/art/collection/object/103RTN#full-artwork-details. I cleaned it up so that the background and original text are gone and I could use just the frame.
I also made a little scene divider from that frame :)
I'm really happy with how this turned out.
And here you can see it next to the anthology! The anthology is a folio (paper folded once), while Royal Flush is a quarto (paper folded twice, meaning it's half the size and there were four pages per side of sheet).
As always: Many thanks to the Renegade Bindery Discord Server @renegadeguild for opening up the world of fanbinding to me. And thanks to astolat for sharing this beauty.
I read this as it was being posted and it is such a well-crafted story!
Harry Potter defeated Voldemort at the Battle of Hogwarts on May 2nd, 1998.
But what if he didn't?
Seven years after the Battle, and Harry is locked in a war he can't seem to win. The last thing he needs is one Draco Malfoy arriving into his HQ to disrupt everything—let alone two Draco Malfoys.
This book is heavy!
I made the font 1pt smaller than what I usually go with and it still ended up at nearly 700 pages.
More images and me yappin' under the cut :)
I found that cover image a while ago and knew I wanted to use it for a Harry Potter fic. That silhouette of the willow against the dark blue background is just so beautiful! (I think the Whomping Willow doesn't appear at all in the fic, but the illustration still felt fitting because of the "Night" in the title, and also because of the generally dark vibes.)
I did mess up the cover a little: I glued the board with the cutout on upside down 🙃
The image was supposed to sit in the upper half of the cover so I had to improvise and add the title above it to balance things out.
Especially for multi-chapter fics with important authors' notes I like to include a Bonus Material section :) It feels a bit like being able to click through the behind the scenes extras on a DVD after watching a movie.
