#69 “Why the hell are you bleeding!?”
“Why the hell are you bleeding!?” The words tumbled too fast out of Vechs’ mouth when he saw the sight of Blame breathing heavily at the door, arms folded tightly across his stomach, blood dripping from his nose and running down his face. He almost ran to Blame, stumbling over his feet.Blame looked terrible, like he’d been in a fight.“I’m… I’m okay Vechs, I just need to get cleaned up.”“Who hurt you?”Blame walked shakily inside and sat down at Vechs’ dining table. Vechs went to the kitchen to get a wet towel and antiseptic. Blame tilted his head back to try to contain the bleed, but he soon felt dizzy so stopped. “Blame, sit tight.” Vechs sounded anxious. Vechs came into the dining room again, a towel over his arm and a large bowl of hot water in his hands. He set down the bowl and began cleaning the blood from Blame’s face, the towel blossoming with red as the blood flowed freely.“Tell me who hurt you.”Blame blinked a few times. “It was… there are a couple of guys out there. Mafia or something… I had emeralds on me and they knew somehow, and… and after they, after they hit me they stole the emeralds from my wallet.”“Blame are you okay?” Vechs stopped dabbing for a moment to look with concern in Blame’s eyes. “You seem really out of it.”“I’m… okay,” Blame said. “But you need to be careful out there. Those guys are ruthless. There’s one with a long beard, seems pretty old, and one with dark hair who’s younger. They wear black clothes…” Blame talked fast, and Vechs realised with growing concern that his eyelids kept drooping.Vechs finally noticed the huge stain growing across Blame’s shirt when he looked down, and a feeling of horror began to grow from the bottom of his stomach.“Blame,” he said slowly. “Move your arms.”“I’m sorry,” Blame mumbled. He moved his arms from where they crossed his stomach, revealing a shocking gash across his abdomen. Without the pressure from his arms, blood flowed much faster and Vechs knew he would bleed out within minutes.“Blame.”“I am so sorry…. Vechs… I’m sorry.”Vechs dropped the towel, stooping to put his arms around Blame. He was crying now, and he couldn’t see much through the tears. He buried his face in Blame’s shoulder. He couldn’t lose him, and yet it was the only thing that seemed certain now.“Please don’t die.”Vechs sobbed harder. He knew he should be helping, trying his hardest to stem the bleeding, but something paralysed him.“There’s nothing you could do,” Blame said in a whisper. “I knew it was lethal from the moment I was stabbed. It’s a miracle I got home, but I wanted to see you…”Vechs heard his heart stop beating, and knew he was gone.
