Camp NaNo Meme: Day 5

T minus 1 day: Back cover Summary Maybe you have all your novel prep done today—if so, congrats! For the rest of us who failed to outline every little detail, surely you have some of the events laid out for the journey your readers will take. Write a short summary of your novel like you’d find on the back cover. It often helps to start with an introduction to your setting and what situation your main characters will find themselves in at the beginning of the novel. Don’t forget to use concrete, attention-grabbing details to hook the reader, and give us a good hint of what to expect for the main conflict of your novel—but no spoilers please!

Caerwyn, the most powerful kingdom in the world, is beginning to buckle under the weight of violent political strife, colonialism, and foreign war. House Vitalis, the family who has held the Golden Throne for the past twenty years, are beginning to lose sight of the responsibilities of power, especially King Lyall.  Now, a threat that had once been thought to have been stamped out returns: dark magic.

The Kingdom has not seen true order since the  rule of House Romenel, whom King Lyall's father led a coupe against. But the old, noble family was thought to have been wiped out in a single night. Until now.

Liana, the last born of the Romenels, has by extraordinary circumstances, lived to become a pirate whose work is based in the Capital's harbor; right under the King's nose. One night, she and her comrades are approached by the Commander of the King's Guard, not to arrest her, but to seek her help in solving the mystery of who is practicing magic in the Royal Palace. But, she has other plans. To her, this is an opportunity to avenge the death of the family that she never knew.

Everything changes when they realize who is truly behind the dark magic. The dynamics shift and Liana must make a difficult choice. In the wake of newfound love, she has an opportunity to lead the life of freedom and pleasure that she always wanted. But, the politics of the kingdom begin to pressure her to surrender this dream and take on the burden of her birth.

Liana Romenel, though she may not act like it, was born a princess. Thanks to her older brother, Ivan, the two survived the coupe against their father, making them the last of an ancient, noble family.  She was raised in a public house in the poor district of one of Caerwyn's island colonies, Madzetal. While Ivan taught her all he could recall from his childhood in the Royal Palace, she did not grow into a refined young lady. Though she held a heavy sense of pride in her heritage, like her brother, she had no interest in leading the same life as their regal ancestors.

As a teenager, she found herself attracted to both men and women. She experimented with both, though far away from her brother's watchful eye. While she was freely sexual, at the same time, she found that when she did fall for someone, she fell hard. Her childhood friend, Neleh, became her first love. It was because of Neleh that Liana was forced to leave Madzetal. One night, she was assaulted by a sailor and Liana saved her, though committing murder in the process.

Neleh's father, Marin, a sea captain, sailed his daughter and the Romenels away from the colonies and back to Liana's birthplace. Though they became settled in the Capital, Neleh and Liana's relationship was never the same. Neleh ended up eloping with a man from the northern part of the kingdom.

A heart-broken father, Marin stayed to help Ivan with his plans; to start a revolution. It began with small acts of rebellion, such as pirating Royal cargo ships. They gathered others who were discontent with their lot in life, including an Islander named Ameen, who became Ivan's second-in-command alongside Liana.

Even though their lives were going well, Ivan was still unhappy. He realized that he needed more men and political power in order to take back his father's throne. One night, Liana found a letter that Ivan was writing to a nobleman, promising her to marry his son in exchange for soldiers. She became furious and confronted him. A change in power happened then; every man in the guild became loyal to her, over her brother. The shift in dynamics caused Ivan to leave abruptly and he has not been seen or heard from since.

Liana's strong leadership has not only kept the rebel group together, but influenced the faith of the lower classes of Caerwyn's capital. Much of the profit from the pirating is returned to the people, who have economically suffered due to the new king's policies. Though she has her faults, mostly in her slightly immoral value of trivial and fleeting pleasures, she has proven herself to be a more capable leader than the King of Caerwyn himself.
