SCRATCHTHEBLOCK PRESENTS: THE BOOMBOX THEORY
As y’all know , we are so fascinated by hip-hop old-scool-esque beats,underground mellow vibes,boombap sonorities and head-nodding rhythms…
With the brand new hip-hop selection The Boombox Theory we tried to imagine an iconic symbol of the hip-hop golden era, the boombox playing quality black music from the past and the recent years!
GRAP LUVA – TOUCH THE SKY (PRODUCED BY SKYE)
In 1999 Blindside Records dropped a superlative compilation titled Wide Angles recruiting great hip-hop performers and producers such as: De La Soul,Black Star,Pharoahe Monch ,J-Live,DJ Spinna and Kenny Dope. We resumed the compilation to select the stunning Touch The Sky with Ini’s member, Grap Luva acting as master of ceremony and U.K electronic-techno producer Steve Pickton who often worked on compelling hip-hop productions under the moniker Skye.For the occasion Skye used the sample of a piece by Chicago jazz guitarist and bassist Phil Upchurch .
GRAND PUBA – A LITTLE OF THIS (PRODCUED BY MARK SPARKS)
The boombox plays nostalgic beats from the 1995. Former member of legendary hip-hop group Brand Nubian,Grand Puba released in 1995 his sophomore project titled 2000 from which we chose the joint titled A Little Of This. Maybe on his second solo-work the New York rapper didn’t repeat the success of his debut album but we ain’t no doubt about the solidity of this single masterfully produced by North Carolina producer Mark Sparks, the man behind brilliant works for Mary J Blige,Guru,Mic Geronimo,Boys II Men,Salt’n'Pepa,Donell Jones and the list goes on and on. In January Mr.Puba released his last single titled The More Things Change.
DJ CENTER FEAT. ODDISEE – LEAVE THE CITY OUTSIDE (CHRIS READ REMIX)
Brooklyn DJ/producer and founder of the label Push The Fader , DJ Center legitimized his status of skilful producer with the debut album Everything In Time released in 2010. The acclaimed opus is an invitation to explore DJ Center’s soulful approach to a wide range of music: hip-hop,electronic,afro-beat and much more. Everything In Time represents one of the most interesting and classy projects of the last decade thanks also an impressive line up of collaborators: emcee Oddisee,jazz stellar vocalist Gretchen Parlato,neo-soul songstress Renee Neufville among others. Two years later renowned U.K artist, DJ Chris Read delivered a sumptuous treatment remix of Leave The City Outside and the result is something epic! Chris is currently working on a compilation of remixes and productions titled All Night featuring: Oddisee,Algebra,Pugs Atomz and many others.Check out The Flow remix performed by neo-soul veteran Bilal premiered by Wax Poetics . DE LA SOUL – EGO TRIPPIN (PART 2) (PRODUCED BY PRINCE PAUL)
Native Tongues affiliate, De La Soul flaunted their swag and cool style with the third full-length album titled Buhloone Mindstate dropped in 1993. Queens DJ/producer Prince Paul (he cooked bangers for Big Daddy King, MC Lyte,Stetsasonic,Slick Rick ) produced the outstanding Ego Trippin (Part 2) adding spicy jazz notes using the sample of a piece by New Orleans trumpeter and bandleader Al Hirt. Last year we posted a brilliant remix of Ego Trippin handled by Nashville producer Amerigo Gazaway. Recently De La Soul launched the KickStarter campaign for the new album…So stay tuned!
DAYNE JORDAN – FELLOW (PRODUCED BY DJ JAZZY JEFF)
Philly rising rhymesayer Dayne Jordan is cementing his name thanks his collaboration with hip-hop luminary DJ Jazzy Jeff on da project In progress. One of our fave joint is surely the track titled Fellow,an old-school-esque tune where breezy rhymes and fat beats blow your mind. Mad props to DJ Jazzy Jeff who resumed a 1974 record by jazz musician Bob James , flipping the track titled Nautilus. Grab your headphones and taste the sound of Steezus Shiest enhanced with the instrumental titled Loungin by U.K producer Mecca:83 from his 2011 beat-tape titled Life Sketches Vol.1 & 2 . Put together the conscious rap of emcee Talib Kweli and the ultra-magnetic bars of Mos Def and the result is Black Star.In 1998 they tore up the ghetto streets with the masterpiece Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star enlisting an impressive line up of heavyweight producers: Hi-Tek,Shawn J Period,J.Rawls,Ge-Ology,88-Keys! Pump up the volume and make your neighbors jump from their chairs with the fantastic Astronomy produced by the magic touch of Mr.Walt (1/2 of Da Beatminerz) who made the beats from the sample of Love Theme From Spartacus by hungarian jazz guitarist Gábor Szabó.

A few days ago, New York rapper and producer Bishop Nehru released a new EP promoted by Mass Appeal Records. The supa-dope five pieces consisting of Wan2times, Walo, CoCheese, InfiniteWill and Lefthand dropped last year their mixtape 94th Side EP rapping over brilliant instrumentals by hot producers like Mecca:83,Evil Needle,KNXWLEDGE,Iman Omari and WunTwo among others.
Today we deliver another proof of their compelling music with the recent tune titled Lost.
