Mrs. Puff is hospitalized this week with surgery scheduled for Friday after an ultrasound today revealed an obstructed oviduct. We’ll know more once they open her up, but it appears an egg broke in her oviduct causing a buildup of egg matter which causes pain, and if left untreated, leads to infection and eventually death. Just one more reason to give up eggs. Hens were selectively bred by humans to lay a ridiculous amount of eggs (between 200-300/year depending on the breed), when in the wild, chickens only lay eggs to have babies, just like any other bird. This surgery will be expensive and we remind people that chickens, just like dogs and cats, need humans who commit to the very best medical care for them and take them to the vet when something isn’t right. We love our brave girl and know that she will likely be overwhelmed by the sounds and smells of a new place (she’s blind so her other senses are heightened).
