Gramont Peak via Descansos Trail - Box Canyon Recreation Area, NM

The golf course was closed today, so it gave us the opportunity to do a little hiking from our campsite. We walked up the wash, known as The Box:

The wash only goes a short distance before you run into a fence that prohibits further exploration. Along the walls of the canyon are several caves. We climbed up to check one of them out:

The cave pictured above was about 40-50' deep. The climb up to it was a bit steep and very slick - lots of loose rocks. After our short walk down the wash, we found the trail that would take us up to the area above the canyon. We walked along the Descansos Trail until it intersected with the Gramont Peak Trail. We then climbed up to the top of Gramont Peak - bagged a 6000' peak!

We really enjoyed this hike, a bit of a climb at the start, but then a nice walk along the ridge before a short climb to the top of the peak. We ended up doing a nice little 6-mile hike. We saw a bit of the local wildlife:
