NEM Foundation Sets Up Blockchain Hub in Melbourne
NEM has started its plan to expand in Australia’s blockchain system by launching the NEM Blockchain Hub in Melbourne. The blockchain hub has their own dedicated NEM representatives to engage with members to the public and the community, to help them understand NEM Foundation’s vision of blockchain technology and its cryptocurrency, XEM.
It will also be a way to continue to grow NEM’s ecosystem partners and help support startups that are interested in adopting the technology for their businesses through activities, blockchain workshops, and forums held throughout the year.
“The launch of the NEM Blockchain Hub in Melbourne is a strong sign of our commitment towards supporting innovation in Australia and the world. Having first launched our Australian operations at the FinTech Australia Intersekt Festival last year, NEM is now present in over 40 countries,” said NEM Lead in Australia and New Zealand, Jian Chan.
The NEM Australia and NZ Head also expressed that NEM plans to launch further hubs across the Asia Pacific region as part of its global expansion strategy.
Dr. Kate Cornick, CEO of LaunchVic, says LaunchVic is pleased by the opportunity to work closely with the NEM Foundation and its ecosystem partners.
“Blockchain is a fast-growing and evolving technology, and LaunchVic is pleased to welcome NEM.io Foundation to the Victorian Innovation Hub. This is set to become a multi-sector co-working facility that celebrates collaboration and innovation for more than 360 of Australia’s top startups, accelerators, and incubators,” said LaunchVic CEO, Kate Cornick.
The NEM Blockchain Centre and Blockchain Hub will also join Stone & Chalk, one of Australia’s fintech fixtures, which extended from Sydney to Melbourne in 2017.
“We are excited to include NEM as a part of the Stone & Chalk community. Blockchain is an area of growth and we look forward to working together on initiatives to support the ecosystem here,” said Stone & Chalk General Manager, Alan Tsen.
The Innovation Hub is home to several key organizations across the Australian fintech, startups, and blockchain space, including: LaunchVic, Stone & Chalk, CSIRO’s data innovation group Data 61, That Startup Show, Starmate, Sprout X, and The Medtech Actuator.
“There is a demand within our community to understand the difference between various blockchain protocols, and we are glad that we are able to work with NEM on this,” said Blockchain Centre General Manager, Karen Cohen.

NEM (XEM) Head towards Global Adoption as Malaysian Minister Visits NEM’s Centre
Malaysian Deputy Minister of Primary Industry Datuk Seri Shamsul Md. Akin visited the NEM Blockchain Centre to show his support of NEM.
In this special visit, NEM explained to the minister how blockchain technology works and how NEM is making some changes to the world with its blockchain technology. This interest from the Malaysian Government can help advance NEM.
“#Malaysia‘s Deputy Minister of Primary Industry, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Md. Akin recently paid a visit to the #NEM Blockchain Centre. We had the opportunity to give the deputy minister an overview of #blockchain and NEM as well as its use cases,” @NEMofficial tweeted.
Blockchain is an asset management system and is continuously being improved. With its unique features (speed, security, and no third party involved), blockchain will make things easier to and more time-efficient.
Malaysia’s support will be a great boost to NEM. Its economic power will help NEM grow its network and promote cryptocurrency. It can also help facilitate the adoption of XEM, especially around Southeast Asia.

Signs of Success: MOCD signing and DTEC Forum
Signs of Success: MOCD signing and DTEC Forum
The NEM Middle East team signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Community Development (MOCD) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Ministry’s programs and initiatives are focused on children’s rights, family entrepreneurship, and anti-discrimination. They are also engaged in social security policy development, social inclusion of marginalized sectors, and strengthening of Emirati families. NEM’s role is to develop innovative blockchain solutions to these societal problems.
The MoU is about aligning MOCD with the UAE Blockchain 2021 strategy. The NEM blockchain technology, especially with its applications on public notarizations, voting, and registry, will be utilized to develop solutions for MOCD.
This MOU is symbolic of the developing cooperation between MOCD and the NEM Foundation in working hand in hand and developing blockchain-based solutions for the ministry, and establishing programs focused in creating awareness about the technology among the Emirati families.
Present during the signing of the MoU to represent the NEM Foundation is NEM Council Member and Regional Head for SE Asia Stephen Chia, accompanied by the NEM Middle East team. For the MOCD, the signing was done and witnessed by Assistant Undersecretary of Social Welfare Mr. Nasser Ismail, Financial Consultant Yousif Al Hammadi, Technical Business Analyst Walid Sulaiman Al Abbas, and Minister’s Adviser Mr. Saeed Abdulla who initiated the development of their solutions on the NEM blockchain.
Meanwhile, the DTEC Forum simultaneously occurred at the Dubai Technology Entrepreneur Center, attended by other members of the NEM Middle East team. The DTEC Forum discussed the future of smart cities. Four esteemed speakers discussed the drivers of a smart city: Vice President ICT Commercial — Du Telecoms Mr. Jihad Tayara, Mr. Fadi Shanaah from Orange Business Services, Eng. Muammar Khaled Al Katheeri from DSOA, and Mr. Paul Christian Uy Espiritu from the NEM Middle East. NEM presented blockchain as a tool that can be used as one of the key drivers of a smart city. DTEC is located inside the Dubai Silicon Oasis, which is a test bed for making Dubai a smarter smart city.
The signing of the MoU and the participation in the DTEC Forum were both crucial for the expansion of NEM’s influence in the region.

Exhibiting the Future of Blockchain: NEM at GITEX 2018
Exhibiting the Future of Blockchain: NEM at GITEX 2018
Last 2–6 October 2018, NEM actively participated in the GITEX 2018 to showcase what blockchain can do. NEM also brought in some of the projects developed on the NEM platform, as well as some startups that the NEM team has developed an alliance with.
ProximaX, a NEM blockchain-based file storage system, highlighted its power and usability. Its Founder and CEO, Lon Wong, was also a panel member in the 10X stage. Cryptaur X-game and Krypto Football both exhibited the use of the NEM blockchain to power-up gaming platforms, while Prover made it as semifinalist in the Supernova startup pitch competition. Hackquarters, a NEM ally in promoting the use of the NEM blockchain in Turkey was also present in the event. Other NEM partners such as PundiX, Paytomat, Free Market Token, and Denarii Cash drew the interest of investors, incubators, and attendees, even leading to deals and agreements within the 4-day startup exhibit.
NEM’s participation in the GITEX 2018 was closely supported by other regional teams. Southeast Asia teams flew to Dubai to demonstrate support to the Middle East team. NEM Singapore’s William Tan, Abraham, and Wilma Lapuz; NEM Indonesia’s Yafi Muhammad; and NEM Foundation Council Member and Regional Director for SEA Stephen Chia from NEM Malaysia were all part of the crew that manned the NEM booth, together with NEM Middle East.
Perhaps the most important highlight of GITEX 2018 for NEM was the signing of an agreement between the Ministry of Community Development of the United Arab Emirates and NEM.io Foundation to co-develop projects of the ministry to move forward towards UAE’s vision to be blockchain-powered by 2021.
Indeed, NEM’s participation in the event expressed the clear motive of the NEM Foundation to support blockchain initiatives in the Middle East. Because of the success of NEM’s involvement in GITEX 2018, the NEM Middle East team is in discussion with some of the major institutions in UAE in hopes of developing strong partnerships and cooperation in the region.
This is a success for the whole NEM Community!
