Weekend Warriors: Cheers to New Beginnings
8/8/18
By Jenica Money
I have learned over the course of my 28 years that, despite my charming spontaneity, I’m about as allergic to transitions as a vampire is to garlic. Change can be difficult, but I recognize a good beginning when I sees it (like my marriage in September!). This upcoming weekend’s arts events are similarly filled to the brim with exciting fresh starts, and I’m grateful for the many kick-offs Columbus will have to offer.
MadLab Theatre is set to open the world premiere production of Lost in Time this weekend, with a special preview performance tomorrow, Aug. 9. The 8 p.m. at MadLab Theatre. Also on Friday are: Art MGMT’s opening reception for their Harlem Renaissance exhibition at the Hilton Downtown Columbus, Adena Griffith’s sculptural Behind the Eyes, Below the Throat at Blockfort Gallery and the Vanderelli Room’s aptly named F-ART exhibition. The former collection expresses the artist’s own battle with mental health issues; the latter serves as a giant middle finger to conventional orthodoxy in art.
Change means adapting, and that is what some galleries in the Short North are doing as they deal with construction-related challenges. The Sherrie, Lindsay and Brand-Roberts galleries have teamed up with the Dublin Arts Council to produce Short North/Long North, on display now until Sept. 14 at the Dublin Arts Council’s gallery on Riverside Drive. If you’re looking for a reason to head back downtown, hit up Festival Latino this Saturday and Sunday at Genoa Park.
My Sunday night is set to end with ProMusica’s Summer Music Series at the Franklin Park Conservatory. The wonderful David Danzmayr is conducting three nights: Aug. 9, 11 and 12. Enjoy Amanda Bettin’s horticultural creations while listening to John Pellegrino’s soothing bass. In my opinion, relaxing to live renditions of film scores in a beautiful garden is really the perfect end to my summer season—definitely my kind of bachelorette party.
Semisonic’s 1998 hit “Closing Time” taught me that every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end. This Sunday is the final chance to visit Inherent Structure, the Wexner Center for the Arts’ showcase of over 60 abstract paintings created by 16 artists. But have no fear, for several new adventures await. Here’s to many more fresh starts, and to always remembering that #artmakescbus!
Jenica Money is the Festival Coordinator at the Greater Columbus Arts Council. She’s now considering just getting married at Festival Latino with a couple thousand of her closest friends.

Block Fort - FCFU// Live As You Make It Up Session
So it's been rather quiet on the Block Fort front, mostly due to 3rd year sucking away all my free time, Laura having a real person teacher job and Petey being in all the bands ever! Though, it was sunny this weekend and we thought we'd make the most of what we've got and film a session on the Hotblack roof! This is our unrecorded of yet song 'FCFU', which stands for 'Fine City Fuck Ups' and I promise sounds mental full band! It would be extra tasty if you can share this around, even if it is just to berate us for how much of a dickhead we all look in sunglasses (apart from Laura, she looks suave!) Here's to summer and pissing off neighbours with your best buddies!
