I didn't understand the ethos of Phoebe Philo's Céline until I reached my mid-20's, when I realized how she truly created a brand for a modern woman. It was slow fashion, investment pieces designed to be worn and stand the test of time and trends. I also realized that it was a brand that didn't feed into an image of an oversexualized woman, one without a full face of make up or a body subjected to the male gaze, and how a woman's intelligence can be complimented through the unconventional shapes and lines that her pieces spoke. It was a brand designed by a woman, for women. Quiet confidence is something that hardly earns merit in our age of noise and even more with our insatiable appetite for consumption, so here's to hoping that there are new designers to fill this void.
