Bloggers’ Central Tumblr Tricks and Tips #5;

Extensions. An extension is a small program that you can add to tumblr to make your blogging even easier and more enjoyable. My personal favourite is XKit, which you can download for free, from here.

The main feature about XKit that you'll find makes blogging better is the One Click Postage extension it has. To use it, simply hover over the reblog button on photos and a little pop up will appear, giving you the option to add tags, add a caption, remove all captions, replace the current captions with a new one by you, which blog you want to post it to (if you have sideblogs), and whether you want to reblog, queue, or draft the post. Kind of similar to the alt+reblog shortcut, although it gives you a lot more options as well.

XKit comes with many extensions, so it'd take ages for me to go through them all and explain them, so I'm just going to quickly take you through my favourite ones:

XInbox - allows you to tag all asks with 'answered' (just an example), automatically tags published answers with the askers url, slims fanmail, shows queue and draft options

Reblog Yourself - pretty self explanatory

Shuffle Queue - again, pretty self explanatory

Audio Downloader - allows you to download an .mp3 file if the post was uploaded to tumblr (spotify, soundcloud and youtube audios won't work)

Glowing Follow - makes the follow button on blogs glow if they are following you, and if you are not following them back

Mass+ - enables you to easily select and tag or delete posts through your mass post editor on tumblr, by enabling you to search by tags, months or post type, and effectively delete them 100 at a time

There are still 30+ extensions that XKit has to offer that I haven't talked about, all in all XKit is an amazing extension for your computer that allows you to blog a lot easier and makes your experience more enjoyable.

Bloggers’ Central Best Blogs #5

Introducing the gorg blog tygrea, run by Bersabel. Bersabel has had her blog since July 2012, and has previously been serene, then rosy, and has now transitioned into a sort of gypsy/indie/roma blog, whatever the name is these days. Bersabel's fab blog sports a very simple theme, with multiple sized posts. Her blogstyle is very clean and very soothing, and probably my favourite thing about her blog is the bucketlist page she has. Definitely a blog to be on your following list!

Bloggers’ Central Tumblr Tricks and Tips #3;

Following people is obviously a very important part of having a good blog, it allows posts to be brought forward onto your dashboard. Lots of bloggers make mistakes whilst following people, which leads to a few little problems.

Following back everybody who follows means that it's highly likely all sorts of posts are going to be scattered over your dash, which is not good when it comes to crying to keep a clean blog. A clean blog means that your blog fits into one blogstyle, and that all posts fall under that blogstyle.

Following blogs of different blogstyles means that there will be all sorts of posts from all sorts of different blogstyles on your dashboard, which will tempt you to stray from your blogstyle, making your blog look messy and unattractive. Unfortunately, this will lead to blogs being reluctant to follow you, and may even result in bloggers who are already following you, to unfollow you.

Many bloggers try to keep their following list to a minimum, some bloggers don't even like to be following more than say, 150 blogs. At the moment, I (florels) am following over 500 blogs. The more blogs you're following, the better! Your dash is never still, there's nothing more annoying than refreshing your dash only to have one new post.

Don't be afraid to unfollow people. Who cares if they have an unfollower tracker? If their blogstyle is different from yours, don't follow them (if you're friends in real life or if you've talked to them through tumblr before it's a different story). Following people with different post styles to yours, as I said before, could lead to you reblogging all styles of posts, resulting in a messy blog, which will make other bloggers hesitant in following you.

Bloggers’ Central Best Blogs #4

Introducing the lovely lushclub. Considered by many as one of Tumblr's elite, Nina is a 15 year old who's known of the website for 2 years, but has only been blogging for about 1. She's previously been a personal, boho and pastel blog, but has now settled for something of a mix between modern and fresh. Nina has been very creative and joined on to the ABCs bandwagon, featuring a total of 36 blogs. Her favourite things about Tumblr are finding great pictures and talking to everyone.

Bloggers’ Central Best Blogs #3

Introducing the lovely naivefairy. This 1 year-old gypsy blog is run by the gorgeous Shai. The beige background is so soothing scrolling through the posts, sometimes coloured backgrounds can look a little off but Shai has managed to find the perfect tone. Her playlist is to die for and her quotes tag is sure to inspire all. Previously a street style fashion blog, Shai then transitioned into an urban blog, but is now determined on sticking to a gypsy blog. Her favourite things about tumblr are talking to people and blogging about her dreams.

Bloggers’ Central Tumblr Tricks and Tips #2;

Having a smooth, clean theme is probably one of the most important things about having a good blog. It’s so important because when people view your blog, a messy, unkempt theme makes your posts also look messy and unkempt, even if you have some of the best posts around.

A few key points to a good theme are:

autoscroll - except fandom blogs

clear, easily accessable links

posts not too small

no more than 5 columns

colours that match your blogstyle

fonts that match your blogstyle

Autoscroll allows for viewers on your blog to easily see the types of posts you have to offer. Easily accessable links enable people to get to your ask page if they have any questions, what you look like, your photos, etc. Posts that are too small are obviously just hard to see. You don’t want your viewers straining their eyes just to see what posts you reblog.

Try not to have any more than 5 columns on your blog. Different computers/laptops have different heights, so if your posts are loading on your small laptop, they may not load on a full screen computer monitor. I personally, have had this issue with my own blog, where I’ve had a 6 column theme that worked completely fine on my laptop. But, when I viewed my blog from my computer monitor, the autoscroll wouldn’t work because the posts didn’t reach the bottom of the page. Just something to be careful of.

Colours that match your blogstyle are surprisingly important. For rosy and bubblegum blogs, try stick with pretty pastels and pinks. Modern/posh blogs usually look best with more neutral tones like your greys and whites, and fresh/neon blogs look a lot better with your more brighter colours.

Fonts aren’t as big as an issue, but I suggest that if you own a gypsy blog, that you use a serif font. Eg Baskerville, Cambria, Garamond and Georgia. If you have a modern/posh/fresh/neon blog, try sticking with your sans serif fonts, such as Arial, Calibri, Gill Sans MT, etc. You’ll find that the sans serif fonts are a lot ‘rounder’. Bloggers’ Central Best Blogs #2

Introducing the lovely lushize. A gorgeous modern/lush blog that is full of lovely, clean posts that are sure to freshen your mind. Muberra is 16, she's had the blog for less than a year and she's previously been a personal blog, a vertical blog, and even pale, but she's now settled into the fab style she is now. She thinks that although tumblr is very entertaining, she finds there is also a lot about it that she doesn't like.
